15.2.19 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 15th Feb 2019 @ 9:37am

Firstly, thank you to all the parents and carers that attended parent’s evening this week.  It was wonderful to be able to share with you your child’s work books and discuss their progress.  We have now discussed your child’s targets with you to enable you to support your child’s future progress and also we have sent home some of the additional support pieces that we promised too.  Every child was handed a common exception words list which also made a note of the other word groups they need to learn to SPELL.  In addition to this a phonics screening pack has been popped into your child’s bag so they can work on this over half term.  Mrs Worstencroft and I are collating a list of interactive math games and story apps for you and your child and these will be live on our class page within the next few days.

After half term we are holding a phonics meeting for all parents and carers.  This is a wonderful opportunity for you to learn how we teach phonics and also a valuable opportunity for you to ask questions about the weird and wonderful world of phonics!

This half term has whizzed by and we have covered so much!  In English we have now completed Dear Greenpeace and written letters of enquiry using questions and question marks and also letters of response.  The children have shown improved stamina in their writing lately and have injected some lovely imaginative ideas into their letter writing.

In maths we have begun to look at adding by making 10 first.  We have had to pull on our number bonds to 10 to work out how to add to numbers together.  For example when looking at 7 + 6, we would look at what we would add to the 7 first to make 10 then add the remaining amount. So 7 + 3 = 10 then add the remaining 3.  The children have worked hard using lots of practical resources to help them.  Well done Sandymere class!

In science we have looked for signs of winter and discussed how the days are shorter during this season.  We also enjoyed finding out which animals hibernate.  The children were surprised to learn that frogs hibernate as well as bats and bears and enjoyed learning the word migrate.  We decided that it would be a good idea for us to migrate to warmer places too!  We then created ‘signs of winter’ zig zag books to illustrate our understanding.

It’s been a busy and eventful week and we are sure that you are all ready for a rest.  So on that note, we hope you have a wonderful half term break.

See you all on Tuesday 26th February.
