19.9.19 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 19th Sep 2019 @ 10:29am

Wow - we are nearing the end of Week 3 in Year 1 already and we have packed so much learning in!

In English we have continued to explore the story Lost and Found and started to consider the feelings of the penguin this week   The children took part is some lovely role play and pretended to be the sad and lonely penguin then wrote some fabulous sentences.  As we continue with the story the children are looking at animals that might be lost and considering their attributes and completing some descriptive writing.

In maths we continued to work with number within 10 (in some cases the children went beyond 10) exploring one more and one less practically and using number tracks.  We also looked at ordering numbers and explaining where numbers should be placed and why.  There was some excellent discussions and explanations.

Thank you to all the children who have been practising their spellings.  We can really see how the children are using these spellings correctly in their writing at school.  Keep practising!  Today’s spelling homework is now live on our class page and paper copies come home this week. Remember to keep the homework as fun and practical as possible.

This week we have begun our geography topic and talked about where we live.  Some children knew their home address however many were unsure.  Perhaps they could practise their home address over the next few weeks?

We have also found time to talk about the signs of autumn, explore leaf shapes and even carry out some leaf printing! Phew - no wonder we are all feeling a little tired!

We have shared lots of books this week and really enjoying books in different formats.  We have enjoyed the story of Goldilocks via audiobook and Lost and Found as a DVD story also every Monday my children are sending in a book that was one of their childhood favourites.  This week they chose 'Thank you for looking after my pets' - a story all about leaving instructions of how to look after the household pets but the pets turn out to be baboons, snakes and crocodiles!  We have also enjoyed replenishing our library book basket (we added some non-fiction texts this week) and exchanged all library books that were retruned to school on Wednesday.  Don't forget to share the library books with your children each week - perhaps this weekend take the books out into the garden for a story and a snack?  Do let us know whether your child enjoyed their library book by adding a note in their reading record.  Thank you SO much for all the wonderful home reading that is taking place too - lots of raffle tickets have be earned.  Your children are going to be fabulous readers if they read regularly.

That's all for now - I know Mrs Worstencroft has some gorgeous activties planned for the chiildren to finish the week off.

Have a wonderful weekend - more sun has been forecast!
