23.3.18 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 23rd Mar 2018 @ 12:53pm

Firstly a massive thank you to each and every family for attending parent’s evening this week. Mrs Worstencroft and I were delighted to share your child’s progress with you and have the opportunity to talk about some of the great achievements your child has made. A summary of key points from parent’s eve are:

· Keep practising the Year 1 common exception words

· Fantastic support from families with phonics – so please do keep practising segmenting and blending those real/alien words

· Year 1 Phonics Screening takes place nationally in June (date tbc)

· It’s a great idea to correct number reversals

· Whilst reading, remember to discuss the book, predict and ask questions

Many families are already doing so much of the above to support their child, so thank you! Remember you don’t have to do these every night, they’re simply a collection of helpful tips that parents have asked for.

This week the children have been incredibly busy yet again with The Curious Case of the Missing Mammoth and we realised that Teddy the baby woolly mammoth had in fact escaped! We decided to create some MISSING posters with some fabulous descriptive language to help us to find Teddy and reunite him with his brother Timothy. Thankfully Teddy has now been found.

In maths this week we have been practising counting in 2s and used the SPLAT SQUARE to help us to look for patterns in numbers to 50. Perhaps your child might like to practise this at home too? http://www.primarygames.co.uk/pg2/splat/splatsq100.html

Our scientists have been exploring things that are alive, dead or never been alive. The children went out and about around the school grounds and used their super sleuthing skills to search for evidence. They found that some items could in fact go under two headings for example they found a dead plant and one that was still living. Also in science we continued to look at different habitats and the animals that live within them. We have now looked at pond, jungle, sea and forest habitats.

SECRET TASK – can you work out what a micro habitat is? You could take photos, draw a picture, create a micro habitat or search for information in books, the internet or ask a family member.

Please continue to practise the song A Gift for You ready for next week’s Easter Service in church on Thursday 29th March.

See you all on Monday
