25.4.19 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 25th Apr 2019 @ 9:52am

Another warm and sunny week and another short week at school but that hasn’t stopped us from having lots of fun in our learning!

In maths we had so much fun measuring using non-standard measures.  We measured the playground in strides and then used pens to measure items around the classroom.  We quickly realised that this wasn’t giving us true measurements though so on Wednesday switched to measuring using multi-link.  The results were much better!

We have continued to look at the story Stanley’s Stick and had a wonderful time ordering the story using just 6 pictures from the text then orally retold the story in small groups.  We then went on to caption the pictures with a specific focus on basic skills including sentence punctuation. Today the children are writing the story in their own words and including noun phrases and lots of imaginative language.  I can’t wait to read them next week.

Our science lessons have taken us to look at the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees.  We then painted the different tree types using watercolours and finger printing.  The results are beautiful.

It’s been quite a creative week as we have also developed our collaging skills in art.  Each child searched through magazines for images that used their favourite colour then they used ripping and tearing techniques to collect their colour samples.  These were then used to collage half a face.  Not an easy task when there are curved edges on a face but the children were brilliant at developing these skills and the final results are stunning.  The faces will be completed next week when we add our self-portrait to the other half of the face.

Mrs Pile enjoyed a fabulous outdoor PE lesson with the children on Wednesday and made a point of coming to find me to tell me how wonderful all the children were – well done Sandymere children!

There has been lots of phonics practise this week with a particular focus on listening to the sound in words and using these skills for the spelling as well as reading of the words.  Keep up the good work!

All reading books have been changed this week, although there were a few children that had left theirs at home.  Please could you make sure that your child has their reading book in school every day?  Thank you.

That’s all for this week.  Let’s hope the sun continues to shine into next week.
