Blakemere's Weekly Blog - 08.12.2023

Date: 10th Dec 2023 @ 11:44am

Once again, we have got through lots and lots this week in Blakemere and are continuing to work hard. We have spent some time this week learning and rehearsing our song for the Carol Service on Tuesday, which is mentioned in Mrs Snowdon's blog. The Year 6 children have also been working hard on learning their lines to tell the Christmas Story throughout the service.

English

We have explored lots of different poems over the last couple of weeks in English all based on the theme of Tigers. We have explored William Blake's 'The Tyger' poem, Michaela Morgan's Tyger, Tyger poem and Clare Bevan's Tell me, Tiger poem. This last poem is the one that we shall be using to write our own poem. We shall all be creating a question poem about an endangered animal. The poem will have five stanza's, each with a question to the endangered animal. Each child has selected an endangered animal that they have explored and learnt about and this will be the animal they use in their poem, which we shall be drafting and writing next week. These poems will also make our display so watch this space.

Maths

We have contonued to explore BIDMAS this week and use the rules of BIDMAS to solve many different types of questions. Towards the end of the week, we started our new unit on fractions. We began by exploring equivalent fractions and how we can use images to help use to fnd those fractions that are equivalent. We also explored how we can use our knowledge of multiplication and division to help too. This again reinforced the importance to the children of having a secure knowledge of their times tables.

Geography

We have started our new unit in Georgraphy now we have finised our History topic. We are focusing on the geography of the UK - its countries, capital cities, regions, counties, cities, the physical and human geography, trade links to name but a few. We shall be using maps and atlases throughout this unit of work to help us to develop our confidence in using maps and atlases to support our learning. Why not ask your child about the UK and see if they can tell the names of the four countries and their capital cities?

PSHE

We have been exploring computer safety in PSHE with a focus on making friends online and the importance of being safe, not revealing personal information and NEVER meeting anyone you meet online. The children had a mature attitude towards the topic and the discussions we had.

Next week is our last week before we finish for Christmas. It is going to be another busy one with some nice Christmassy activities planned for Friday.

How you can help your child at home:

  • Encourage them to read at least four times a week. If they are unsure about their book, I am happy to recommend a text as it is important that we find the right one to encourage reading for pleasure.
  • Go on to Times Table Rock Stars to support the fluent recall and confidence of all times table facts. We had more children on this week, but let's try to get even more this week.
  • Practise spellings.
  • Ensure your child has their PE in school on a Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Ensure their reading folder is in school EVERY DAY.

Any questions, please do come and speak to me,

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
