Blakemere's Class Blog and World Book Day - 08.03.2024

Date: 10th Mar 2024 @ 11:16am

Another busy week here in Blakemere and we have managed to get through so much!

English

We have started our new text in English, which the children are looking forward to exploring in more detail. We have explored lots of the vocabulary from the text by finding definitions and exploring synonyms and antonyms. THe children have started to make some initial predictions about the tect based on some of the words they were looking at during these lessons.

World Book Day - 07.03.2024

On Thursday, Miss Ormandy delivered some wonderful activities for World Book Day. We spent some of the morning learning and rehearsing our part of the Benjamin Zephaniah poem 'People will always need people' which will be created in to a whole school recital of the poem so keep a look out for this. Our morning was inspired by the achievements of Malala Yousafzai. The children learnt about Malala's life and read her story Malala's Magic Pencil and how she fought tirelessly to promote equal opportunities for education. They then produced a cinquain poem about her and went on to decorate it using Islamic art. it was so lovely to see the children fully engaged and using some great vocabulary to describe Malala.

Maths

The children have continued to work on decimals this week and finding the equivalent fractions. We have also started our new unit of work which will focus on percentages.

History

We have started our new topic in history, which is a local history topic exploring 'How the salt industry has changed over time?' I was blown away with how interested the children were within this topic and the questions that they were asking to develop thier knowledge and understanding further. We started by exploring some different images and the children wer asked to make connections between them and then we moved on to briefly look at how both Winsford and Nantwich are described as salt towns. THis is something that we shall explore over the next few lessons.

What can you do at home?

  • Ensure your child has prepared themselves for the week ahead by having their reading book and diary in school with them every day and having the correct PE kit in school every Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Reading diaries are checked every Monday so it is imperative they are in school.
  • Read with your child and encourage them to find books and reading materials that they are interested in. I am also always happy to help and recommend books if needed.
  • Encourage your child to practise their times tables on Times Table Rockstar. Times tables are incredibly important in all areas of Maths and a fast and confident recall of them really helps. Numbers of children accessing this excellent resource has fallen over the past few weeks so I will be looking for numbers now increasing. Passwords can be found in your child's reading diary.
  • Practise the list of spellings that are sent home.
  • You may want to encourage your child to take a look in the SATS Practise and Revision section of Blakemere's class page. This is for Year 6 children only. If you do complete any of the tasks, please do show me what you have completed and achieved.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and if you have any questions then please do ask.
