Blakemere's Weekly Blog - 01.12.2023

Date: 3rd Dec 2023 @ 10:31am

What a super week we have had in Blakemere both learning and achieving lots. it amazes what the children can and have acheived on a daily basis.

English

In English this week, we have started our poetry unit which has focused predominately on tigers as an endangered animal. We have read, explored and performed the poem 'A tiger in a zoo' by Leslie Norris which details the difference of a tiger's life in captivity and in the wild. Next week, we are going to explore a couple more poems about tigers and the similarities and differences between them. We are then going to use one of the poems that we have read as a model for our own poem about an endangered animal of our choosing.

Maths

We have had lots going on in Maths this week. The Year 5 children have worked tirelessly to secure their knowledge and understanding of division and long multiplication and solve problems using them both whilst the Year 6 children have worked hard each day to learn the steps for solving long division questions. I have been so impressed at the children's drive and determination to acheive this. Well done to all.

Science

In Science, this week, we have started our new unit on electricity. We learnt how electricity is a secondary source of energy and comes from a primary source and how it can be generated in different ways. The children produced their own news clip explaining and detailing the importance of electricity in the modern world.

History

We have now come to the end of our history topic which has focused on the World War and what happened during the Battle of Britain. On Friday, we explored how The Blitz followed the Battle of Britain and how it was the German Luftwaffe bombing British cities. We looked at the role of APR (air raid precautions role) during The Blitz and explored some primary sources of evidence (photographs) of objects used where the children had to think about what they could see and what the item was used for.

Also, Christmas has come to Blakemere this week. Together, we have put our class Christmas decorations up and started our class advent calendar with MAF (Mission Aviation Federation).

Finally, a huge shout out to our children whose work was an excellent example for this week - Esme, Olivia, Ava, Lexi and Miley.

How you can help your child at home:

  • Encourage them to read at least four times a week. If they are unsure about their book, I am happy to recommend a text as it is important that we find the right one to encourage reading for pleasure.
  • Go on to Times Table Rock Stars to support the fluent recall and confidence of all times table facts. We had more children on this week, but let's try to get even more this week.
  • Practise spellings.
  • Ensure your child has their PE in school on a Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Ensure their reading folder is in school EVERY DAY.

Any questions, please do come and speak to me,

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
