Blakemere's Weekly Blog - 05.01.2024

Date: 7th Jan 2024 @ 9:47am

It has been lovely to see all the children return to school following the Christmas break. Everyone has setlled back in well and have shown a great willingness to learn.

English

We have started a new unit of work in English where we shall be using the book 'Can we save the tiger?' by Martin Jenkins to create a hybrid report based on an endangered animal. This week the children have explored lots of different vocabulary that is linked to our text and then used these words to further explore synonyms and antonyms.

Maths

We are continuing with our unit on fractions. This week we have explored converting mixed number fractions to improper fractions and then improper fractions to mixed numbers. Again, the children were able to see the importance of knowing their time tables to support them with this. We then move on to comparing fractions with different denominators.

Geography

We have explored this week how England is made up of nine different regions and we explored the region that we live in. You could maybe ask your child f they can remember the region that we live in. The children used atlases to help them to label a map with the regions and then answered questions about the regions based on the information they had been given about population and size in area.

Science

In Science, the childre nwere tasked with making a simple circuit and adding in different types of switches to see the impact that an open and closed switch had on a circuit. Lots of investigation and problem solving took place to get the switch working correctly in the circuit. The children then went on to make their own switch using two split  pins, a piece of card and a paperclip. These were then tested within the circuit to see if they worked. From this, the children were able to conclude that metal is a conductor of electriclty.

What can you do at home?

  • Read with your child and encourage them to find books that they are interested in.
  • Encourage your child to practise their times tables on Times Table Rockstar. Times tables are incredibly important in all areas of Maths and a fast and confident recall ot them really helps.
  • Practise the list of spellings that are sent home.
  • you may want to enlucrage your child to take a look in the SATS Practise and Revision section of Blakemere's class page. This is fir Year 6 children only.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
