Happy New Year!

What a wonderful first week back we have had in Blakemere. I was beyond impressed with the drive and determination that all the children returned to school with this week.

English

We have started to explore our new book this week in English and all I have shared so far with the children is one image from the book and a list of topic vocabulary that all have a link to our book. The predictions, inferences and discussions that were had during each activity were excellent. So far, we have agreed that our book could potentially be around the theme of equal right and fighting for justice. We also spent some time exploring synonyms and antonyms for different words that we could use within our writing. We are all very much looking forward to finding out about our book next week.

Maths

We have continued to explore the theme of fractions this week in Maths, whihcwe began befire Christmas. This week, we explored converting mixed number fractions to improper and improper to mixed number. We then moved on to comparing fractions which have different denominators. In order to do this, the children had to use their knowledge of common multiples to find a common denominator. This method, that the children have used, will be used during our learning again next week when we order fractions and add and subtract them. Super confidence from all the children this week.

Science

We have stated our new unit in science, which focuses on the properties of different materials. This week we explored what we already knew and what we wanted to find out. We also looked at lots of different vocabulary linked to materials to make sure we understood what they all meant. This will help with our learning throught the topic.

Computing

On Friday, we spent the day exploring websites and looking at their features and what makes them engaging. We also explored copyright and what this means and why it is important to use copyright-free images from the web. We also talked about what a website was and what web pages were. We then spent lots of time working with our partners to design our own website. The children were tasked with the activity of creating a website about the Titanic based on our learning in history before Christmas. This allowed the children to be confident about the topic that they were creating their website about but also helped me to see what learning they had remember. The children had to think about the audience and purpose of their website first. They then went on to design their home page and additional pages, before moving on to creating their home page on google sites. The children will continue to create their websites next week before learning about and creating hyperlinks for their pages.

General information

*For this term, PE in Blakemere will be every Tuesday and Wednesday. Children will need to have their PE kits (both indoor and outdoor) on these days.

*Reading at least four times per week at home is also an expectation along with accessing times table rockstars and practising spelling words. Times tables are an essential part of all areas of Maths.

SECRET QUESTION

What is the name of the company that owned the Titanic?

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and I shall see you tomorrow.
