Blakemere's Weekly Blog - 19.04.2024

Date: 21st Apr 2024 @ 10:28am

It was lovely to see all the children back in class this week after the Easter Holidays and ready to learn. We have achieved lots this week, which has been great.

Maths

We have explored different units of measure within Maths this week and how to convert between them. We have also read scales and applied our learning to different worded problems. The children had to use their knowledge and understanding of multipying and dividing by 100 and 1000 to help them to solve these questions.

English

We have continued to explore the text King Kong this week. We have explored using speech punctuation accurately to create a speech sandwich of the dialogue between Carl and Ann when they first met. The children had to think about their word choices and what we could infer from the characters from these choices. We have also recapped on fronted adverbials and how they can be used to tell us about the time, manner or place that the action is taking place. Towards the end of the week, we took on the role of Carl Denham and planned and wrote a letter as if we were him back to the studio informing them about how the film was going.

Science

On Friday, in Science, we explored thermal insulators. We wanted to find the best insulator to stop our ice cubes from melting. The children produced their investigation in their books and then helped to set the investigation. A great discussion was held arond variables and what materials would be successful.

Year 6 Swimming

The Year 6 children started their swimming lessons on Monday and it was a great first lesson. Lots of confidence in the water and it was great to see the children proud of their achievements.

Secret Question

Share our class blog with your child and send them in with the answer to this secret question to earn themselves some raffle tickets:

What is the name of the film director in our class book.

What can you do at home?

  • Ensure your child has prepared themselves for the week ahead by having their reading book and diary in school with them every day and having the correct PE kit in school. Monday and Tuesday for Year 5 children and Tuesday for Year 6.
  • Year 6 children need their swimming kit and goggles every Monday.
  • Reading diaries are checked every Tuesday so it is imperative they are in school.
  • Read with your child and encourage them to find books and reading materials that they are interested in. I am also always happy to help and recommend books if needed.
  • Encourage your child to practise their times tables on Times Table Rockstar. Times tables are incredibly important in all areas of Maths and a fast and confident recall of them really helps. Numbers of children accessing this excellent resource has fallen over the past few weeks so I will be looking for numbers now increasing. Passwords can be found in your child's reading diary.
  • Practise the list of spellings that are sent home.
  • You may want to encourage your child to take a look in the SATS Practise and Revision section of Blakemere's class page. This is for Year 6 children only. If you do complete any of the tasks, please do show me what you have completed and achieved.
  •

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and if you have any questions then please do ask.
