Head Teacher Blog: Friday 12th October 2018

Date: 12th Oct 2018 @ 10:47am

This week involved all of our Key Stage Two children going off on a very exciting trip to Burwardsley, leaving a very quiet school yesterday! The children have been looking at the topic of Stones, Barrows and Hill Forts and carried out a number of activities linked to this. Please see individual class pages for more information and possibly some pictures.

We have been thinking about true hope in school this week. We have looked at how Peter had hope when God released him from prison as well as looking at Jesus’ first miracle of turning water into wine and how this signified the beginning of people realising that he was the promised one that they could put their hope in, as he will never let them down. Children have been trying to support each other with their hopes this week – such as doing well on a spelling test, so helping their friend practice their spellings – please ask your children about their hopes for the future and see how they could be supported in fulfilling their hopes.

We also looked at the story of Oliver by Birgitta Sif. Oliver is a little boy who feels different – we didn’t find out why in the story, he just feels like he doesn’t fit in. We empathised with Oliver as we can all look at others and feel different to them, but we talked about the need to remember that different doesn’t mean something is wrong.  It just means that we are special, we are unique.  Everyone has their differences but at Over St. John’s there are No Outsiders, we welcome everyone and treat everyone equally. “Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you.” Romans 15:7.

John Jones was back in school this week working with the Year 5 group of children and Miss Pattison to think about how we celebrate diversity at Over St. John’s. The children have developed their ‘criteria’ that they will measure the school against whilst watching lessons, speaking to pupils and adults. They are incredibly keen to work on this project and I am really looking forward to what they discover!

Thank you to those parents who were able to attend the Hatchmere No Outsiders information session yesterday – I think those present would agree that there are many benefits to the work that we are doing around diversity in school. There is still time to book on to the other sessions that are running if anybody else would like to – all sessions are the same, whichever one you are able to attend. Dates are below and copies of the letter can be found on the website at Virtual Office>Parent Zone>Letters under ‘No Outsiders Letter.’

A huge thank you to Mrs Jones and Mrs Hodge for expertly looking after the children in Hatchmere during Mrs Kelly’s absence. Mrs Kelly is due back in school on Tuesday and I am sure that the children are really looking forward to seeing her.

Parking

Please may I ask all those who travel to school in cars to park considerately for pedestrians wanting to use the footpath and cross roads. It can get incredibly busy outside school at drop off and pick up times, but it will help to ensure the safety of all if we do not block pavements – it limits visibility for smaller children and forces those with pushchairs onto the road. Thank you for your support in this.
