16.11.18 Sandymere Learning Update
Date: 16th Nov 2018 @ 10:22am
This week is Parliament week and the children across the school have been learning about democracy, parliament, how it works and also celebrating Vote 100 and the suffragettes. In Sandymere the children have explored the Houses of Parliament through images, held their own ‘in class’ parliamentary debate, learnt about the suffragettes and held a variety of democratic votes throughout the week. See separate blogs for more information and photographs.
In English this week we have been looking further at information text and exploring the differences between information sentences and story sentences. The children used their phonics skills for decoding the new or tricky words in these texts. Also in English the children have learnt about indexes, glossaries and have even written captions and descriptive sentences. Impressive Sandymere class!
By the end of Year 1 the children have a set of words that should be able to read and spell independently. These are known as the common exception words. This week the children have been learning to read these through games and challenges. This homework also relates to the spelling of these words. In a few weeks we will be assessing progress on the spelling of these words and will monitor these over the year. Here is a copy of those words
In phonics this week we have started to look at split vowel digraphs. If you would like more information about these then please use the following link:

Also this week we have introduced the Russian artist Mark Rothko. The children thoroughly enjoyed recreating his style using a range of medium including crayons and ready mix paints. We needed to use our skills from last week of mixing different shades of red and then sweep the brushes and sponges across the page to create the horizontal lines. There are some beautiful interpretations which will see in your child’s topic books.
During PSHCE time we reflected on Remembrance Sunday and the children shared their own experiences of parades they’d attended and events they’d seen over the weekend. Thank you to Olivia for sharing her wonderful news about Remembrance Day with her family.
Keep reading those extra reading miles and over the weekend.
See you all on Monday.
