Computing
Computing Intent
At Over St John’s, our Computing curriculum is shaped explicitly by our theologically rooted Christian vision: “Let your light shine before others” (Matthew 5:16). We believe that every child is created by God with unique worth, dignity and potential, and our purpose in Computing is to nurture that God‑given light so pupils can grow in confidence, develop wisdom and be prepared to flourish in an ever‑changing digital world.
Rooted in our vision to put children first, and grounded in faith and respect, our Computing curriculum equips pupils with the knowledge, skills and character needed to use technology wisely, safely and responsibly. We are committed to ensuring that every child — including those who are disadvantaged or with SEND — has equitable access to high‑quality digital learning so they can aspire, achieve and shine.
We aim to empower pupils to become confident, competent and creative digital learners who can use technology for good, make informed choices and contribute positively to the world around them. Through carefully sequenced learning in digital literacy, information technology, computer science and online safety, we enable pupils to develop resilience, curiosity, independence and problem‑solving — qualities that help them recognise their own potential and the difference they can make to others.
Following our curriculum rationale, Computing at Over St John’s is designed to be inspirational, to foster curiosity, and to encourage pupils to ask questions, think deeply and develop a sense of responsibility within an increasingly digital society. Our spiral, progressive curriculum ensures pupils know more, remember more and can do more, enabling them to use their digital knowledge confidently, ethically and safely. This aligns with our Christian vision which teaches pupils that using their gifts wisely can help illuminate the world with God’s goodness.
Across the school, the Computing curriculum is adapted thoughtfully to ensure that every child can succeed. Scaffolded activities, deliberate practice routines and explicit vocabulary teaching ensure that disadvantaged and vulnerable learners are supported to shine. Knowledge Organisers, retrieval practice and Rosenshine-informed pedagogy help pupils build long‑term understanding and confidence, preparing them for future learning, employment and digital participation.
Our Computing curriculum helps children discover their God-given potential, grow in the love of God and develop the digital skills, resilience and critical thinking needed to shine brightly — online and in the wider world — both now and in their future lives.
Within our school, Reception and Key Stage One children are taught in single age classes, whereas Key Stage Two children are taught across three mixed year group classes and our curriculum is designed to reflect this.
