Science Intent

At Over St John’s, our Science curriculum is shaped by our Christian vision, “Let your light shine before others” (Matthew 5:16). We believe every child is created by God with unique worth, curiosity and potential, and we aim to nurture that God‑given light by helping pupils explore, understand and marvel at the world God has made.

Our intention is to develop pupils who are confident, inquisitive and reflective young scientists who can think critically, ask meaningful questions and use scientific methods to deepen their understanding of natural phenomena. We want children to experience awe and wonder, to recognise beauty and order in the world, and to see themselves as capable of contributing positively to society through scientific thinking.

Our curriculum is carefully designed to ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum and to meet the needs of mixed-age classes while maintaining strong progression. Working scientifically skills — such as observing, predicting, questioning, researching, investigating, measuring and evaluating — are deliberately sequenced so that every child can build confidence, independence and resilience.

Vocabulary development is central to our intent. We ensure pupils acquire and use precise scientific language so that they can articulate their thinking clearly, explain concepts accurately, and engage confidently in scientific discussion.

We ensure equity by providing an ambitious, inclusive science curriculum for all children — including those with SEND — so that every pupil can flourish, succeed and let their light shine. Through practical experiences, enquiry-based learning and well‑structured teaching, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to understand the world around them, make informed choices, and be prepared for their future.

Within our school, Reception and Key Stage One children are taught in single age classes, whereas Key Stage Two children are taught across three mixed year group classes and our curriculum is designed to reflect this.
