Curriculum Intent for English

At Over St John’s CE Primary School, our English curriculum is rooted in our Christian vision:
“Let your light shine before others” (Matthew 5:16).

We believe every child is created by God with their own unique worth, dignity and potential. Learning to read, write, speak and listen with confidence helps them to share their ideas, express themselves, and let their God‑given light shine both now and in the future. Everything we do is grounded in our commitment to put children first and to nurture faith, respect, challenge, confidence and inspiration.

We want every child to leave Over St John’s as a confident and capable communicator. We see language as a gift, so we focus on building strong foundations through high-quality teaching, plenty of practice and the right support for every child. English isn’t just a subject—it unlocks learning across the whole curriculum and helps children find their voice, express their thoughts and beliefs, and engage with the world around them.

Our aim is to give all pupils a rich and well-planned curriculum that builds their skills over time. We know that many of our children face challenges, including limited early language experiences, so we carefully design our curriculum to develop vocabulary, communication, reading and writing as tools for confidence, independence and opportunity. We want children to enjoy reading and writing and to feel proud of what they can do, knowing that their voice matters.

A big part of our approach is using high-quality books. We believe good stories act as windows, mirrors and doors—helping children see new places and perspectives, recognise themselves, and think about how they can make a difference. Through these texts, children explore important ideas like courage, kindness, fairness and belonging, helping them to grow both academically and personally.

Our curriculum is carefully planned so that knowledge and skills build step by step, from early language development right through to more advanced reading and writing. We use clear teaching, strong modelling, regular practice and opportunities for independence to help children remember more and achieve more. We believe that every child can succeed with the right support and encouragement.

We also design our curriculum to be flexible and responsive to the evolving needs of our pupils and community. We provide tailored support for pupils with SEND and those who need extra help, making sure everyone can access learning and feel valued. This reflects our Christian commitment to care for every child and help them flourish.

Through our English curriculum, we aim to give every child the confidence to take part in learning and in life—to think carefully, speak clearly, write creatively and engage with the world around them. Rooted in our vision, English becomes more than just a subject: it helps children understand their own worth, grow in confidence, and develop into thoughtful, capable individuals ready for their future, able to let their God‑given light shine.
