Spelling
We follow a mastery approach to the teaching of spelling through the programme ‘Pathways to Spell’. from The Literacy Company. It is a programme designed to deliver the statutory content of the Primary National Curriculum for spelling in Key Stages 2 (which is attached below) and which follows a review, explain, practise, apply model. Through weekly teaching of spelling objectives, exploring rules and using a variety of strategies to support spelling, the programme aims to develop children as proficient spellers.
The Key Stage 2 teaching sequence for spelling is attached below. Alongside this, you will also find a copy of the Year 3 and 4 Spelling words and the Year 5 and 6 Spelling words. These are words that the children to know how to spell by the end of Year 4 and then Year 6.
Spelling lessons take place three to four times a week in Key Stage 2 and skills learnt are reinforced and applied within all writing opportunities.
Please also take a look at the Phonics section of the website for information for Reception, Year 1 and Year 2.
