11.1.18 Sandymere Learning Update
Date: 11th Jan 2018 @ 1:18pm
Welcome back! The spring term has now begun and it feels like we’ve never been away. The children have quickly got back into the swing of things and have shown a real positive attitude to their learning this week.
We have started our new topic ‘Where can we explore?’ and talked about a range of different famous explorers from the 13th century right the way through to the present day. The children thoroughly enjoyed considering what we would need to take with us in our explorers backpack and produced some fabulous lists. Apparently I’m not allowed to take my high heels with me!
Also explorer bear will be heading to explore your house soon! Watch this space!
In art we have begun to look at the works of L.S Lowry and the children had a go at sketching matchstick men and women. Next week we will continue this work by creating our own Lowry inspired pictures using charcoal and sketching pencils.
Our English focus has been all about feelings this week. We have shared several poems about feelings and explored the language associated with sad, happy and angry. The children produced some wonderful colour charts linking to feelings and used varying depth of colour to show the intensity of our emotion. Great job!
In maths we are looking at place value of numbers from 11 – 20. We enjoyed ordering and matching words and numerals on Monday then continued our work by exploring how numbers are ‘built’ using Base 10. Some wonderful reasoning was heard. A SHOUT OUT to Isaac and Grace this week for their excellent reasoning skills.
As the week continues Mrs Worstencroft will be looking at writing the Christmas story with the children and continuing working on feelings poetry and numbers 11 – 20 in maths. The children will also have their first dance session too!
On Wednesday Sandymere class met Mrs Pile (who has replaced Mrs Smith) and had their apparatus lesson in the hall. They all had a wonderful time together and Mrs Pile is looking forward to working with the children.
Reading
This week we have started to take EVERY reading record in for checking. Each time your child reads at home to an adult they will receive a raffle ticket. The raffle tickets are collected throughout the week and a winning ticket is drawn for a special prize on Friday. So, the more tickets the more chance of a prize. At this young age it is essential that children are regularly reading to develop their phonic knowledge, word recognition, developing language and fluency. Many children already read regularly and are showing super progress – let’s keep this up Team Sandymere! So please make sure that you write in your child’s diary. Thank you.
Request
Please could you send in to school any clean, natural/nude coloured tights? It doesn’t matter if there are ladders in them or holes. Thank you.
Have a wonderful weekend.
