11.10.18 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 11th Oct 2018 @ 10:03am

This week we have been getting excited about writing our party invitations.  We have written the invitations and posted them to our toys at home to invite them to our party on Friday 12th October.  We hope they arrive! (Thank you for supporting your child in learning and writing their home addresses) Also this week the children have been busy looking at instructions for party games to play.  The needed to use their super reading skills though to read and reorder the instructions as I had managed to get them all mixed up!  With the instructions in order we then practised the games so that we are ready to teach them to our toys on Friday.

In maths this week we have been exploring addition of numbers to 12 using the part/part/whole model and our mental addition skills.  Some fabulous mathematical thinking happening in Sandymere this week and it was a joy to see some team coaching happening too – learning together is always a positive experience.

We have been investigating materials in science this week and learnt a whole host of new words and their meanings.  We handled and looked at glass, wood, fabric and plastic and the children were challenged to describe their properties using the key scientific vocabulary such as transparent, opaque and absorbent.  I was very impressed with how the children used their reading skills to decode these tricky words too!

This week we have started to learn our song for the harvest festival.  Lyrics will be coming home soon so that the children can practise at home too.   As we have a small class it is so important that we can hear all the children’s lovely voices and fill the church with song.

Mrs Snowdon talked to the school about Hope this week in collective worship and throughout the week we have shared our hopes and dreams within our class.  Collective worship at the church on Wednesday shared the Bible story of how Jesus turned water into wine.

Phonics homework this week is a word hunt using the vowel phonemes.  Please could you help your child to search around the house in books, magazines, in food labels or whilst out and about.  Developing your child’s phonic knowledge and confidence is essential for improving skills in reading and writing.

That’s all for this week.  Don’t forget to book your parents evening appointments!

See you on Monday.
