12.9.19 Sandymere Learning Update
Date: 12th Sep 2019 @ 9:53am
What a lovely we week we have had so far! We have been very busy in Sandymere and have really started to get to grips with learning 'the Year 1 way'. In maths we have been working with numbers within 10 using a whole range of practical resources - we had so much fun creating mischief as Numicon thiefs! Don't worry all the numicon is back in its rightful place again now.
In English we were super slueths trying to work out which book we would be using this half term by looking at a set of clues. We had an old suitcase, a torch, a boat, an umbrella, a penguin .... Can you guess? The children were fantastic and worked out it is in fact Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers - one of my personal favourites! We have used the items to come up with super captions such as the old, rusty and smelly suitcase, the grey and white fluffy penguin. Well done children!
We have now started our phonics lessons and have been learning lots of tips and tricks to help us to segment and blend words. We've used sound buttons and punch/slice/dive and even robot arms - don't worry if this doesn't make sense to you as we will be having a parent's meeting very soon to talk you through all this. Keep your eye on the calendar over the next week.
In science we have been looking at the parts of a plants and labelling these carefully using the correct terminology. We created some beautiful collaged plants and flowers ready to label and they are simply stunning.
We even managed to squeeze some art in this week by exploring repeating patterns using colour and shape. We had great fun with our finger printing patterns. I wonder if your child can spot any repeating patterns whilst their out and about this weekend? Perhaps they could take a photo or sample and bring it in to school to share with everyone else?
Every child should have changed their library book this week. We change library books on a WEDNESDAY so please make sure your child brings their old one in ready to exchange. We can not issue a new one without their old one being returned first. Please spend time sharing the library books at home - perhaps it could their bedtime story or maybe a family snuggle time story?
There has been lots of fabulous home reading of book banded books too this week. We are checking reading records regularly and your child is receiving raffle tickets for reading at home and having their name added to the Golden Pot!
Mrs Pile emjoyed a wonderful PE lesson with the children this week and they are getting so quick at changing in and out of their uniform too.
That's all for now. Have a wonderful weekend - it's supposed to be sunny!
