HAPPY NEW YEAR!

AND WELCOME BACK.

We hope that you have all had a wonderful Christmas break and would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the beautiful and generous Christmas gifts. You have been so very kind.

What’s new for Spring Term 2017?

This term we start our new topic called ‘All Aboard!’ and the children will be exploring World maps and learning where the different continents, seas and oceans are, alongside finding out where different countries are positioned across the world. As part of our global learning and British Values work we will be finding out about Japan too. We also be looking key people from the past and the inventions of different forms of transport.

Our Literacy is taking us on a different journey around the world on the back of a dragon. We have begun the term by exploring dragon poems and next week we begin an exciting new book called The Dragon Machine by Helen Ward. May we politely ask that you do not read this book to your child in the meantime as we want to create some elements of surprise with the text.

Also new this term is the change of PE days. PE will now take place on Wednesday morning and Friday afternoon.

In your child’s reading folder you will have seen an invitation to a PHONICS WORKSHOP. This is a totally FREE event and is an absolute must for learning about the mechanics of phonics. It would be fabulous to see you all there.

At the end of this half term there will be a whole school writing exhibition and we are already busy working away at creating some fabulous pieces of work for you to see. More information to follow.

So far this week

We have been looking at dragon poems in Literacy and the children have learned to listen out for rhymes, learnt about verses and explored the importance of using words creatively and for effect. They have written some fabulous poems of their own too.

In maths we have been looking at the place value of numbers to help us to understand the way tens and ones ‘build’ a number. Try this game to develop their skills further http://www.topmarks.co.uk/place-value/place-value-charts

Please note the game says tens and units but we now say tens and ones.

Also this week the children have been looking at dragon eyes and have been drawing their own using repeating patterns to create the surrounding scaly skin. They look amazing and we can’t wait to add the colour!

Mrs Jones is busy finishing the moving toys in Design and Technology and hopefully they’ll be bringing them home soon to share with you.

Polite reminder

The children should only be bringing WATER to school in their water bottles. There have been a number of children bringing juice recently. Thank you for your support.

See you all next week.
