13.9.18 Sandymere Learning Update
Date: 13th Sep 2018 @ 3:05pm
I can’t believe we are already whizzing through week 2 and what a wonderful week it is turning out to be!
The children are settling into the routines of Year 1 beautifully and showing great independence and self-organisation especially when it comes to handing in homework and reading folders. Every child now has their own coloured reading folder which contains their reading books, diary and any important letters or information. Please check these regularly and empty them frequently – they’ll soon fill up with all sorts otherwise! Your child’s reading folder is colour coded according to which day they change their school reading books. An information sheet will be sent home explaining this by the end of the week. To summarise
RED folder – Tuesday
GREEEN folder – Wednesday
BLUE folder – Thursday
YELLOW folder – Friday
There will be lots of reading and checking of folders throughout the week so please do make sure that your child brings their folder every day.
Thank you so much for emailing your child’s homework. Mrs Worstencroft and I are delighted with the responses and we have enjoyed sharing the holiday/trip snaps with the whole class. They are now proudly displayed on our world map. The second piece of homework was a HUGE success too. Thank you for preparing your child to talk about their toy to the whole class. We had a wide variety of toys and we have been using them all week in the classroom for activities in Science, History and English.
Maths has been all about counting forwards and backwards from/to 20. We have noticed that some of the children are finding this a little tricky so any practise at home would be greatly appreciated. We have enjoyed using song and dance to help us. Perhaps you could try this too? There are some great YouTube videos available. We used this one in class www.youtube.com/watch?v=srPktd4k_O8
Also this week we have started out topic ‘Did children have toys in the past?’ We looked at three generations of toys and the children explored very old wooden toys, toys that I used to play with (!) and their own toys. We then had fun sketching toys from the past. Perhaps you could share with your child some of the toys you used to play with too?
We began handwriting this week and learnt how to form the cursive letter c. All cursive letters start on the line and the children found this quite a challenge. If you follow this link you can take a look at how we form the letters. www.teachhandwriting.co.uk/continuous-cursive-letters-beginners.html
All children from Year 1 are taught how to form letters using the cursive script so it’s a good idea to take a look for yourself too so you can be prepared and support them.
It’s been a lovely week with lots of wonderful activities and discoveries and the sun was shining.
See you all on Monday.
