14.9.17 Sandymere Learning Update
Date: 14th Sep 2017 @ 9:46am
Can you believe we are in week 2 of Year 1 already? What a difference a week makes. The children are all now able to come in and put their own belongings away and retrieve them at the end of the day without too much help. They have their own carpet spaces and table spaces and can move from one space to another quickly and sensibly. Most children have shown that they can sit at the table and stay on task with some even able to work independently. Well done children!
This half term we are aiming for children to be able to tackle some tasks without an adult at their table and to work quietly and neatly. We will be introducing their work books next week and showing them how to organise their work carefully. Always an exciting time for all children!
This week we have started out topic ‘What makes ‘Great’ Britain?’ We have begun by looking at globes, atlases and maps to explore where we are in the world. The children LOVED looking at Google maps and zooming in and out of different countries. Perhaps you could download it and explore it at home too? We have looked at how the world looks from space and created our own world using green crayons and blue paint. They look fabulous! In addition to this we have drawn pictures of our own houses and learnt and written our home address! An impressive number of children knew their address – well done. We also talked about how it is important to remember this and why.
In maths we have continued to explore numbers 1 – 20 and Polly Pig has been very helpful in helping us to order numbers and find missing numbers. We have played lots of lovely games and used some excellent language to explain where numbers are positioned in a sequence.
We started handwriting this week and looked at the letter ‘o’. Prior to this the children warmed up their hands with a touch of Dough Disco! You might want to ask your child what this is!
Science was fun as we started looking at the weather and the four seasons. The children really enjoyed dressing the bears according to the seasons. They then drew and labelled their own winter bear.
Phew! We have completed many more activities in addition to this and Mrs Worstencroft is introducing RE today and is looking forward to PE with them tomorrow.
All children should have changed their reading books by now, but if for some reason they haven’t then please do let us know.
Don’t forget to look out for your child’s yellow homework book next Friday which will contain one piece of phonics and one piece of maths homework to be completed before the following Tuesday. All homework is clearly explained to your child verbally and there is a quick summary in their homework book.
I think that’s it for this week.
See you all on Monday!
