15.2.17 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 15th Feb 2018 @ 10:29am

Well can you believe that this is the last blog of the half term? It only seems like yesterday that we were talking about Christmas!

And we are now officially halfway through the school year too! The children have worked SO hard and it has been a pleasure to look through their books and realise just how much they have learned so far in Year 1.

In English we have now finished The Lion Inside unit of work and focussed our attentions on publishing our stories as mini books. The children have been working on their handwriting skills, concentrating on forming their letters correctly and their word spacing. SHOUT OUTs to Summer – Jay and Mason for their beautiful handwriting. All published books will be on display at parent’s evening on 21st and 22nd March (more information to follow regarding parents evening)

Also in English/Phonics we have been focussing on reading and writing the common exception words. Your child needs to be able to read and spell these words by the end of Year 1 and are already making great progress. There are copies of these in your child’s book bags also additional copies in their homework books for half term homework tasks.

Maths has been all about subtraction this week. The children have looked at different strategies and resources to help them to complete subtraction calculations to 20. Some great working out and reasoning could be heard this week. SHOUT OUTs to Aiden and Archie for their independent work in maths this week. Well done boys!

We have continued to look at Ernest Shackleton in History and spent time this week trying to get into the mind set of someone from the past. We completed some role play by imagining we were Ernest and his crew members on board the ship travelling to the Antarctic. The children were challenged to consider what jobs they would do, what they would have on board the ship them and think about the weather and conditions they were travelling in. We agreed that a fruit shoot wouldn’t have been a drink of choice because they hadn’t been invented over a 100 years ago! We then continued our learning by considering how Ernest Shackleton felt when he was on-board the ship. Some great language such as nervous, important and worried was used. Well done children!

Thank you again to those that completed the secret task. We were treated to some wonderful marmoset facts including a couple I didn’t know myself. This week’s SECRET TASK is to create an alien. This can be 3D using boxes, cardboard rolls etc or 2D, collaged, painted, crafted or drawn. We will use these aliens as part of our classroom phonics display. It is also a lovely half term activity to keep the children busy.

Don’t forget we are off to Chester Zoo the first day back after half term 27th February. Your child will need:

· good sturdy footwear as we will be doing a lot of walking

· a warm, waterproof coat, hat, gloves etc as we predict the weather will still be quite cold.

· a packed lunch, snack and drinks in a plastic carrier bag please.

It is going to be a fabulous trip where we aim to visit the elephants and marmosets as a priority! J

That’s all for now. Have a wonderful half term and we will see you on 27th February.
