16.01.2020 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 16th Jan 2020 @ 10:20am

Hello – we have had another lovely week in Sandymere.  We have been focussing our attentions on the seasons this week and finding out which months are within which seasons, then we created our own season’s wheel.  As a class, we explored the differences between autumn and winter then read and sorted true and false statements.  The children are really enjoying our work on the seasons – do they have any winter themed stories or books at home that they would like to bring in to school for us all to share?  If so, send them in next week for our story time.

Our star book this week was recommended by Mr Williamson and his class.  It was a book called Dear Miss and went down a treat with Sandymere class. It is a book full of letters from a young boy who was avoiding going to school and wrote letters to his teacher giving a range of excuses such as climbing Mount Everest and travelling up the River Nile.

We also shared a book of Haiku poems where we had to guess what each poem was describing.  The children were fabulous and solving the clues.

In English we are also enjoying the most fabulous book called The Lion Inside.  This week we have explored the feelings of the mouse and the lion who is quite a show off! Some fabulous writing this week from the children with improved independence too. Well done children!

Our maths lessons have been focussing on exploring 3D shapes.  We have focussed on the sphere, pyramid, cube, cuboid and cylinder and described their features, sorted and compared shapes. We have learnt some new mathematical vocabulary edges, faces and vertices. We really enjoyed exploring which shapes we could stack and roll.  Some children managed to stack 3D shapes above their own height and mine!

Guided reading this week has taken place for all groups – this has been marked into your child’s reading diary.  Library books have been changed and new phonically decodable books have been issued too.  Colour book banded books will be exchanged on Friday.  Please can you make sure that your child has their reading folders and books every day?  We cannot exchange books without these. Thank you.

Mrs Pile enjoyed teaching the children PE this week and tells me every child worked very hard using the large apparatus. Great news! On Friday, Sandymere class are taking part in a dance lesson taught by an external agency – how lucky are they?! I can’t wait to hear all about it.

Keep up the good work Sandymere.

See you on Monday.
