16.11.17 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 16th Nov 2017 @ 10:07am

We began the week with an Anti-Bullying assembly where we looked at the theme of ‘All different, all equal’. We have talked about embracing people’s differences rather than highlighting them in a negative way. We watched two different clips to support this. Perhaps you could watch them alongside your child too? See separate whole school blog for the links. Within the classroom we continued the theme and spent time talking and writing about ourselves and our friends, then celebrated our differences.

In English this week we have introduced books from different cultures - ‘Rainbow Bird’ from Northern Australia and ‘The rabbit who stole the fire’ - a Northern American Indian tale. We have compared the two settings and built up word banks of new vocabulary. Perhaps you could talk about different settings at home with your children or whilst you are out and about this weekend? You could help them to describe the autumn trees, the movement of the water on the river or even the changing skies. Regular conversations with your child plays an integral part of developing a rich and varied vocabulary.

Also this week we were pleased to welcome Miss Pattison (English Lead) into our classroom t and show her our English books.

In phonics we have looked at writing the alphabet in order. Most of the children are fabulous at singing and reciting the alphabet but many are finding it a challenge to write it out correctly. Particular difficulties lay with confusion between g/j. For homework we would like you to practise the alphabet with your child with a particular focus on WRITING it using lower case letters please.

We are also continuing to practise spelling the days of the week.

We have continued to practise cursive letters c, o, a, d, g and introduced the letter q this week. Next week we will be moving on to a new set of letters called ascenders.

Topic work has been focussed around science this week where we have looked at and labelled different plants and flowers. We have also looked at the structure of a flower and discussed how each part works such as the roots suck up water and nutrients from the soil. Some children have created some wonderful Flower Fact booklets too making great use of their sentence building work and cursive handwriting.

PE was all about team games this week and the children had a wonderful time working collaboratively. Mrs Vernon said it was a fabulous lesson and the children worked really hard. Well done children!

And there is still so much more to come this week!!!!

See you all on Monday.
