16.2.17 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 16th Feb 2017 @ 10:46am

So that’s another half term nearly complete. Can you believe that we are halfway through Year 1 already? The children have come on in leaps and bounds and should be very proud of themselves

This week we have made great inroads into our topic ‘All Aboard’ and looked out what the word transport means and created an exhaustive list of different types of transport. We were all very surprised at just how many there are including animals! We have sorted our list of transport into groups of whether they are used on land, sea or in the air and then went on to create our own imaginary form of transport. There were some excellent designs and I’ve got to say I truly hope that one day I get the opportunity to fly in an air balloon boat!

Also in topic we have started to look at transport from the past and discovered a 4000 year old form of transport the Sedan chair. The children were fascinated by the idea of being carried on a chair to the shops. In phonics we have been focusing on alien words and continued to have great fun creating our own alien names using the given graphemes. Don’t forget to get your child to send their own aliens and names into school so I can create a display after half term.

In maths we have continued to look at time and reviewed o’clock and half past. I have added a few time games to the website for you to practise with your child. Thank you to the parents/carers who have sent in copies of extra work their children have completed at home to practise time further.

This week the children had their final week on apparatus in PE and Mrs Smith is very pleased with their progress.

This week the Worship Group led our school assembly about how Jesus inspires us. They also talked about other people who inspire us and why. We then continued this in class and considered who inspired us. The suggestions ranged from Justin Beiber for his dance skills to Harrison Ford for his adventuring spirit. A great discussion and consideration was had by all!

For homework this week your child will receive a pack of phonic activities. The screening test is in June and we want your child to be well prepared. The pack included common exception words to read and then build a house (you’ll need to see it to understand it!), a roll and read game and alien word activity. It may seem a lot however it mostly games and the intention is for your child to have fun with the activities. If your child is enjoying their tablet a little too much over the break then perhaps you could download some phonics games for them to practise their skills too. Win – win! If you don’t have a dice handy for the roll and read game then you can download a dice app for free on your phone or try this one https://www.random.org/dice/?num=1

That’s all for this week and all that’s left for me to say is have a fabulous half term break!
