16.3.18 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 16th Mar 2018 @ 9:37am

This week we have continued to explore the mysteries surrounding the woolly mammoth spotted outside our school and have since discovered that the 'coverless' book is in fact called The Curious Case of the Missing Mammoth. The children are absolutely captivated by this book and we have just discovered that there is in fact TWO woolly mammoths on the loose! How exciting. We have completed some fabulous work on using past tense verbs, suffix –ed and even found time to write a letter to Mrs Worstencroft to tell her about the amazing discoveries inside the museum at night. Ask your child what happened at midnight in the museum?

In phonics we have looked at alternative phonemes for ch//tch and j//dge. Also a review of oi, ir, ue graphemes. Encourage your child to look out for these in their reading and day to day life. Spotting these graphemes out and about, around the house etc is a great way to consolidate them. SECRET TASK ALERT – could you photograph these words each time you spot them? You could then email the photographs to admin@overstjohns.cheshire.sch.uk stating FAO Mrs Williamson or Mrs Worstencroft.

Thank you so much for all the secret task responses. We’ve had a whole host of fantastic books shared about animals ranging from farm animals to ice age animals, including a wooly rhino, so I’ve learnt something new too! A SHOUT OUT to Oliver for bringing in animal fact book with woolly mammoth facts in. A massive thank you also for the wonderful woolly mammoth pictures and information. They are now proudly displayed on our working wall.

In maths this week we have been looking at the <>= signs. Working with numbers to 50 and deciding if they are greater than, less than and equal to another number. Remember ‘the crocodile always eats the largest number’. There were some great responses. SHOUT OUTs to Isaac and Aiden for their independent work in maths this week.

We have continued to look at animals in their habitats this week and also completed our emperor penguins fact sheets. Lots of fabulous information and new discoveries have been made through research, watching clips and discussions between the children. Well done Sandymere – you’ve worked hard this week!

Thank you to all the parents/carers who have booked their parents' evening slots.  Don't forget parents' evening is next Wednesday and Thursday.

See you next week!
