17.10.19 Sandymere Learning Update
Date: 17th Oct 2019 @ 10:22am
Good morning everyone. It was so lovely to see so many of you at parent's evening last night (we will see the rest of you later on) and it was wonderful to hear that so many of you are checking in with the school website regularly and reading these blogs. The weekly blogs are here to let you know all about the exciting activities we do and also share with you the fabulous learning taking place in Year 1.
In english this week we have FINISHED our Lost and Found stories and they are absolutely fantastic. I know that many of you were wowed by the quality of your children's writing last night when you looked at the books. From imaginative ideas to correctly punctuated sentences - we've got so much to be excited about! So much so, that we decided to publish some of the stories in the format of a book. The completed versions will be illustrated and then proudly displayed on our Lost and Found display in the classroom.
In maths this week we have been problem solving using addition. We have been exploring and giving reasons for 'odd one out' numbers sentences and also trying to work out the sequences of addition sentences and extend them further. SHOUT OUTs to Harry and Franklin this week for their amazing super sluething skills in problem solving.
Also this week the children have been outside for PE with Mrs Pile. They had a wonderful time and there were lots of happy, rosy faces when they came back inside. So lovely to get outside in the gorgeous autumn sunshine.
In geography we have been thinking about what we already know about the immeadiate area around our school. The children were able to name the road our school stands on and are beginning to name some key places such as Tesco and the petrol station. Perhaps on your walk to or from school you could encourage your child to spot some more buildings and places? We have begun to add different buildings to a map of Delamere Street. After half term we will be developing our fieldwork skills and going out onto the street and spotting more building and key landmarks.
Phonics has been all about segmenting and blending. This is a skill that needs lots of repetition and practise. We have been building alien words using phonemes from Phases 3 and 5 to create names such as T - ai -g and Th - a - p - e. If you're looking for extra fun activities for the weekend then perhaps your child could design their own alien at home 2d or 3d then send it to school for us to name as a class next week?
SHOUT OUTs to all the parents that have been reading regularly with their child at home. Daily reading practise is essential for helping your child to develop their reading skills. Mrs Worstencroft and I are absolutely thrilled with the fantastic support for all the families. We also hear that the library book exchange is having a positive impact on family reading time too - we hear some grandparents are getting in on the act too. Well done Team Sandymere families! We issue you all a virtual gold star. (We should get some special ones printed!)
That's just a sanp shot of our week and I know that there are many more exciting activities still to go this week.
See you some of you later and the rest on Monday.
Have a lovely weekend.
Mrs Williamson on behalf of Team Sandymere.
