18.10.18 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 18th Oct 2018 @ 12:33pm

This week in Sandymere we have been focussing our attentions on writing our own version of the story Toys in Space by Mini Grey.  The children have been bringing together all their writing skills, creative thoughts and imaginative ideas to write their own version and with some great vocabulary too.  Narrative writing can be challenging especially when writing independently and we are so pleased with the positivity and motivation we have seen from the children.  Just keep practising those cursive c, a and d letters at home.  Check out www.teachhandwriting.co.uk to help you.

In phonics this week we have continued to explore alternative phonemes.  A phoneme is one, two or three letters that go together to create ONE sound such as ‘ee’, ‘ph’, ‘air’.  We have also started to look at the difference between real and alien words.  Don’t worry if all this sounds a little ‘alien’ to you as we will be hosting a phonics meeting for parents in the near future to explain this is more detail and offer to advice and support on how you can support your child at home.

As the seasons have well and truly changed into autumn we have been collating all our learning about autumn into mini booklets.  The children have created some fabulous sentences relaying their learning and have displayed fabulous understanding that autumn is more than leaves falling off trees and why changes happen.  Perhaps you could take your child on an autumn walk this weekend and get them to show you the changes and talk about autumn.  If you do go then please do email photographs of your child on their autumn walk to admin@overstjohns.cheshire.sch.uk

This week in maths we have taken on the tricky challenge of finding fact families.  We even explored how the answer can go first in a number sentence! Through a series of practical activities and investigations the children have been able to apply their reasoning skills too and explain how and why certain number sentences work.  Please keep looking at number formation at home – particularly numbers 3, 5 and 7 as these are proving tricky.

We are well on our way with our harvest song.  This week’s homework is to learn the lyrics off by heart.  I hear some children have already been singing the song to their parents at home!  The harvest festival is next Friday 26th October @ St John’s Church.

That’s all for this week.  Don’t forget to book your parent’s evening times.

See you all on Monday!
