20.9.18 Sandymere Learning Update
Date: 20th Sep 2018 @ 10:41am
We’ve had a busy and fun filled week so far in Sandymere and there was some unusual goings on! We returned from assembly on Tuesday to find a small pile of toys on the classroom floor. Do you know where they have come from? We talked about this as a class and some children suggested we speak to Miss Oxley in the office so we all went down to ask her but Miss Oxley knew othing about them and she knows everything! She even phoned the Post office but still no answers! Some children even asked other members of staff. The mystery continued when we received a special delivery on Wednesday of a book and a letter. Unfortunately the letter was damaged and we couldn’t see who sent it to us! We have created posters describing the toys and hopefully someone will come forward and claim them. Don’t worry we have kept them safe and showed them great kindness. The mystery continues …
In maths we have been practising our counting skills and even tried to orally count to 100. We used this link www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGetqbqDVaA to practise in class - another one for you try at home. We then went on to tackle reasoning questions and consider if we had enough food for all three bears at the picnic. It turned out that when we counted the cakes and biscuits we didn’t have enough for each bear. Thank goodness we checked!
In topic we have continued to explore toys from the past and discussed how older toys didn’t use electricity and batteries. The children enjoyed handling artefacts and trying out the push along and wind-up toys. We have also explored different materials and looked for items made out of gass, wood, plastic and fabric. Many children were surprised about how many things are made of plastic!
The children are really getting to grips with the Golden Rules and showed great understanding of these in relation to the Rule of Law and the importance of following rules and why. In PSHCE we moved on to the golden rule ‘We will listen carefully’ this week and explored what a good listener looks like and why it’s important to listen. We came up with this short list
- Look at the speaker
- Sit or stand quietly and calmly
- Don’t speak whilst someone else is speaking
- If I listen carefully I can learn, follow instructions and understand what is happening around me
Perhaps you could chat to your child about good listening skills at home too?
SHOUT OUT to Oliver for taking part in the summer reading challenge. He shared his certificate and medal with the class and Mrs Snowdon. We are all very proud of him! If your child has taken part in the challenge then please do send in their certificate and we celebrate theirs too.
Remember to keep reading with your child at home. We can already see improvements in some children’s reading particularly those who are reading daily at home. Keep up the good work.
This week’s homework is a little different as it is a whole school piece. There is a letter glued into your child’s homework book outlining the requirements. We would like your child to create a piece of artwork commemorating the First World War soldiers. This can be a painting, collage or drawing. Let the creative juices flow! Some of the pieces we hope to display in the entrance hall to the school! This homework needs to be returned to school on 24th September. Thank you.
That’s all for now!
See you all on Monday.
