22.11.18 Sandymere Learning Update
Date: 22nd Nov 2018 @ 10:11am
This week is Inter Faith week across the school and the children at Over St John’s have been learning about a range of faiths as well as Christianity. In Sandymere we began the week by looking at symbols and beliefs of Christianity and the ways in which Christians follow their beliefs. On Tuesday our vicar George came to teach us about Christianity in Uganda. The children had a wonderful time learning a Christian song in Ugandan and learnt about how the Ugandan’s worship God in long church ceremonies with song and dance. Did you know that Ugandan for Jesus is Yesu? The children will continue to explore Christianity in Uganda over the next couple of days with a whole school Inter Faith celebration on Friday.
In Maths this week we have been looking at subtraction using a range of models, images and resources. We have also practised reading numerals to 100 using a 100 square. We are having a big push on number formation at the moment with a particular focus on 3, 5 and 7. Please could you look out for correct number formation when your child is completing number work at home too?
In English this week we have had our first try at writing our own information page. We began by finding out information about the creation of teddy bears. We drew on our historical knowledge, science vocabulary and reading skills to find the information. Did you know that the first teddy bear was created because of Theodore Roosevelt? Perhaps you could ask your child what the connection is? The completed information texts used some great vocabulary with some improvements in writing sentences that make sense using capital letters and full stops. Keep practising! J
On Monday we are off to Norton Priory Museum for an arts and crafts experience day. Your child will be developing their creative skills using a range of tools and techniques to create festive inspired pieces. We are very excited. Don’t forget your child will need to be in full uniform with a warm coat, snacks, drinks and lunch in a disposable bag. No lunch boxes please. It looks to be a fantastic day and we can’t wait! We will return to school before 3pm for pick up as normal.
Keep reading to clock up those reading miles – certificates will be coming home soon for those that hit their milestones.
That’s all for this week.
See you all on Monday for the trip!
