23.01.2020 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 23rd Jan 2020 @ 9:51am

We have had a lovely week so far and have been busy, busy bees.  On Monday we took part in a dance lesson provided by an external agency where the children were challenged to create eight part dances using their bodies in different ways.  There were twists, turns, gallops and ‘push backs’ to name but a few moves.  Well done children – you certainly worked hard.

We have definitely seen signs of some wintery weather this week which inspired us to complete our winter themed ‘Only one you’ display. We discussed how trees are very much like us.  They all have similar parts (trunks and branches) but they are all so very different. The children’s art work looks beautiful of their silhouetted trees and reflect the celebration of differences. Do pop in and take a look! Don’t forget last week I put out a request for winter themed stories on the blog.  Children bringing books to school is such a lovely way of celebrating reading.  Perhaps you and your child could have a rummage amongst the book shelves, baskets or the local library this weekend and then send them in for us to share on Monday?  As the children know, I love books!

Each day we consider the Bible verse ‘In all things give thanks’ 1 Thessalonians 5:18 which reflects our class Christian Value of thankfulness. This week the children have been thinking carefully of what they are thankful for with thoughts ranging from being thankful for their food, their friends and one child said they were thankful for feeling safe.

In English this week we have explored –er,-est, -ed suffixes and aimed to use these within our writing.  We also wrote in character using the personal pronoun ‘I’.  Sandymere class have been very busy honing their writing skills and is has to be said that their independent writing continues to improve.

Maths this week has focused upon addition of numbers to 20.  The children have used number lines to count on for addition and have been cleverly exploring how to put the largest number first when adding.

Don’t forget to keep an eye on the homework tab where you will find all spelling lists.  These are added to website weekly and your child is encouraged to learn these so that they can be checked throughout the week for their accuracy of spelling these words within their writing.  Perhaps you could add the words to post it notes and spread them around your house to remind the children of the words they need to practise?

We have been enjoying our new science topic focussing on materials and their properties.  This week explored and group materials and learnt some new vocabulary such as rigid, flexible, transparent and waterproof.  I wonder if they can tell you what these words mean.

Have lovely weekend.

See you on Monday.
