23.11.17 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 23rd Nov 2017 @ 9:16am

This week has whizzed by! Mrs Worstencroft and I started the week by attending a maths training day all about Problem solving and reasoning. We found it very useful and are looking forward to putting into practise lots of new and exciting opportunities for reasoning in maths.

In Literacy we have been exploring settings in stories and the children have been using some excellent vocabulary to describe the settings in the story of ‘How the rabbit stole fire’. A SHOUT OUT to Annabelle for her wonderful contribution of ‘In the distance stood snow topped mountains’. They will be ending the week with a little drama and character descriptions of the rabbit and his mischievous antics!

In maths we have been developing our reasoning skills within subtraction. The children worked really hard to explain why certain numbers would not work within a missing number calculation. Well done! We also enjoyed subtraction splat involving play doh! You may wish to ask your child about this activity!

We have worked hard on our science this week and looked at the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees. The children were able to group trees by type and clearly explain the differences. A SHOUT OUT to Oliver and Aiden for their excellent understanding and explanations. We have also looked at what happens to trees during the autumn season and considered the changes we might see as we go into winter.

Before half term we looked at places I could visit within Winsford and we received some interesting responses. So after some further work we have looked again and the children were able to come up with some excellent places for me to visit. The children have created some excellent lists of top places to visit in Winsford and top of the list were Polar Palace and Asda – so look out for me there soon!

Mrs Smith has continued to work on design and technology project this week creating the chassis for the moving vehicle. I was very impressed to hear how well they were using the tools safely.

Letters have come home regarding Christmas activities including a request for donations for our Christmas hamper. This year we are filling our class hamper with traditional Christmas goodies. These can be edible (think minced pies, nuts, Christmas pudding, after dinner mints) and non-edible (candles, crackers, party hats). I’ll be  throwing in a few extra bits into my trolley this weekend to add to the hamper too. Thank you to those who have already sent in contributions – you are SO organised!

The school newsletter is also now live on the school website so do take a look for the latest information and upcoming events.

See you all on Monday!
