It's nearly half term already! Can you believe it?
Another action packed week that started with the most wonderful visit from Anna Jackson a Paralympic GB basketball player. We began by taking part in our sponsored sports event in the hall then Anna spoke to the whole school about her journey into sports and her participation in the Paralympics. Such an inspirational woman and one who was clearly dedicated to her sport. The children thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to ask questions and find out more about the world of wheelchair basketball. Don’t forget to return your sponsor forms and monies to school. A huge thank you to those who have already returned theirs.
There has been more sports day practise this week and the children are really getting to grips with the skills needed for the different races. Fingers crossed for lovely weather on the morning of Thursday 20th June!
In maths this week we have been developing our skills in division and equal sharing and applying these to solving word problems. Keep practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s at home so that the children can quickly and efficiently count sets of objects. You could practise this by asking your child to count the change in your money jars at home by sorting to 2, 5 and 10 pence’s then totalling them up.
We have been looking at a range of poems in English this week and we have been democratically voting for our favourites. At the beginning of the week a sure favourite was William Wordsworth’s Daffoldils however as the week progressed the majority vote went for a poem called Who?. I wonder how the children will vote on Friday once they’ve been introduced to haiku poems?
Mrs Worstencroft and I thoroughly enjoyed reading the children’s versions of the Stanley’s Stick story. There were some excellent examples of clear sentence structure, imaginative language and basic punctuation. We were very entertained especially by the idea of a chocolate spoon!
In art this week we have practised our painting skills by creating water coloured versions of fields of daffodils as inspired by our poetry unit. They were so good that we had to call Mrs Snowdon down to the classroom to prove that the children painted them and not professional artists! Well done Sandymere.
We have been having a big push on handwriting and letter formation recently and many children are rising to the challenge once again this week. There has been some beautiful examples of neat handwriting – some of which are displayed on the classroom wall.
That’s all for this week. Have a wonderful half term break and we will see you all soon for the final half term in Year 1.
