24.1.19 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 24th Jan 2019 @ 9:27am

This week I arrived at school to see that our mysterious egg had disappeared!  The children informed me that something strange happened on Friday and that they think the egg hatched and then flew away through the window.  Thank goodness our favourite book The Dragon Machine didn’t fly away too!  We have been really enjoying The Dragon Machine and you can enjoy it with your child too by clicking on the link www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVw6-4ig7eo

This week we boxed up the original story into beginning, middle and end then changed some parts of the story and began to write our own version.  The quality of the writing so far has been wonderful and the children have been using some fabulous word choices and in some cases remembering add to noun phrases in too.  I can’t wait to read the next part which they are completing with Mrs Worstencroft today!

In maths this week we have been using number lines to 20 to count on/add. There were some impressive skills being used including putting the largest number first and then counting on.  The children used some accurate jumping techniques and enjoyed the success of using a different method for addition. Also in maths the children have been revisiting recalling number bonds to 10 in preparation for learning bonds to 20.  Many children are secure with this and are quick and ready with their recall.  Well done children.  Perhaps they could watch this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lD9tjBUiXs0 to enjoy recalling them at home.  They all certainly enjoyed playing this game too https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button follow the link then click the button that says number bonds then ‘make 10’.

We have been continuing our work on different animal groups in science and the children have shown some great understanding of the features of each group.  They were also surprised that humans are in the same group (mammals) as lions and tigers!

Next week Sandymere are delivering their class assembly to the whole school and our focus is the class Christian value of thankfulness and its Bible link:

1 Thessalonians 5:18 ‘In everything give thanks’

This week the children have considered what it means to be thankful and how it is more than simply saying the words thank you – although this is very important! The children have written letters of thanks to God and have written some thoughtful and considerate words.  Some will read these out in assembly.  Homework this week is to practise their readings.

Lots of exciting activities planned for next week including the next instalment of The Dragon Machine and some dragon related art.

See you all on Monday.
