25.1.18 Sandymere Learning Update
Date: 25th Jan 2018 @ 2:28pm
Week 3 has been a wonderful week with some fabulous learning opportunities.
We began the week by continuing to discover the book ‘The Lion Inside’. (We still haven’t read the whole book as we are predicting and exploring the text as we go along.) Our grammar focus has been around the suffixes –er and –est and the children were fabulous coming up with words using these suffixes then using them in role play (one of the animals from the story). The children had great fun with sentences such as ‘I am bigger than you and I am the greatest animal in the jungle’. They thoroughly enjoyed creating their character masks and were keen to bring them home to share with you too. Another focus in English has been exploring the characteristics of each character. The children are building a rich and varied vocabulary – SHOUT OUT to Mason for his suggestion that ‘the lion is confident’.
In maths we have been extending our knowledge and understanding of numbers to 20 with a particular focus on using our bonds to 10 knowledge to help us to find bonds to 20. Last week the children were given a rhyme to learn to help them to quickly memorise and recall bonds to 10. Please continue to practise this with them as it will really help to secure their mental recall. SHOUT OUTS to Olivia, Grace, Isaac and Tom who were fabulous at their recall. Funny how you all remembered 8 and 2!
In phonics we have introduced fidget spinner phonics games. If you have any fidget spinners hanging around the house then put them to one side as next week, 1st Feb homework, you will need these.
Speaking of phonics – don’t forget our phonics workshop on Monday 2pm – 3pm. It will be a fabulous opportunity to really unpick Year 1 phonics and help you to understand how it all works so that can you offer the best support to your child. Thank you so much to those who have already returned their slips. We look forward to seeing you all.
In history we began to look at Ernest Shackleton, the British explorer who explored the Antarctic over 100 years ago. We had a wonderful time playing a true/false game to sort the facts. The children are thoroughly enjoying this topic and finding out about significant individuals from the past. Perhaps you could help your child create their own explorers kit at home and role play an adventure?
Mrs Pile thoroughly enjoyed her PE lesson with the children on Wednesday and was pleased with their developing skills using the apparatus.
We are now working hard on our guided reading sessions and the children are enjoying predicting and developing their inference skills. Please may I ask that you do not share the book Dougal’s Deep Sea Diary with your child at home so that we can work through it as a group? Thank you.
Another huge thank you for those that have returned their slips for the All Ages Service on 4th February.
That’s all for now!
Mrs Williamson
