25.4.18 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 25th Apr 2018 @ 9:07pm

Week two already and what a wonderful week we have had so far in Sandymere. This week we have been completing our work on famous explorers and looked at the lives and significant achievements of Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong. Your children have used maps, and globes to look at where these explorers travelled and also looked at books, the internet and fact sheets to find out more about the lives of people in the past. We have now created timelines showing different explorers from past to present including female explorers and ones that are still alive today. We have also learnt the meaning of the word ‘chronology’. Perhaps you could ask your child to explain what it means?

Your children showed great understanding of these famous people through completing guided reading activities and creating their own fact sheets. SECRET TASK ALERT – Can you find five interesting facts about Mary Kingsley the explorer? You could pop to your local library, us the internet or even ask a family member. Simply jot down what you found out and send it into school on Monday.

In English we introduced our new topic of ‘Who are our heroes?’ (See Summer topic web on our class page) and began with poetry. We thoroughly enjoyed learning the poem ‘What makes a superhero?’ and even had the chance to perform these to the class. We have revised plurals and had a try at substituting plurals within the poem for our own. Great job! Towards the end of the week your child will be creating their own superhero complete with description.

In maths this week we have looked at arrays. This is a tricky concept but the children worked really hard on it. Arrays is an introduction to looking at multiplication and we have been transferring our skills in counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. Here is a short clip that might help you to understand it as parents too. https://www.bbc.com/education/clips/z9j6wxs

Sandymere have been lucky to have some extra coaching in PE this week with the development of throwing and catching skills with Roger on Monday, cricket coaching today and then on Friday there will be Kung-fu! Please remember to make sure your child has their full PE kit in school.

We have honed our art skills this week with the creation of aboriginal inspired painting. We took a look at the skills and inspirations of this traditional Australian art style and then created our own animals. They look amazing!

Well it’s been a fun and jam packed week so far and there is still so much more to come including a wonderful quintet performing in collective worship tomorrow.

Have a lovely few days and we’ll see you on Monday!
