27.9.18 Sandymere Learning Update
Date: 27th Sep 2018 @ 3:34pm
May I begin with a HUGE thank you for helping your child to create such beautiful pieces of art to commemorate WW1. We had a whole host of contributions including sketches, collages and paintings. The competition will be judge soon and the winning pieces will be displayed in the main entrance to the office. SHOUT OUT to Olivia for sharing with us photographs of her dad from when he was in the Navy and for telling us what she had found out from her chats with her dad.
In science this week, we started to look for signs of autumn. We explored how autumn is more than just the leaves changing colour and falling off the trees and that it is a season of change for the animals and a wide range of other plants too. We enjoyed completing autumn collages and painting autumn trees using fine brushes for applying watercolours and ready mix paints dabbed on with cotton buds. The final pieces are beautiful.
This week Mrs Snowdon wanted us all to think about our own talents after sharing the Bible story of Joseph and his ability to translate dreams. The children talked about how our talents can be hidden – the children’s talents ranged from singing to dancing and from being super footballers to doing back flips! We are looking forward to developing our talents this year and encouraging one another.
In English we have continued to look at the book Toys in Space. We have taken on the persona of the characters and pretended that we too were left outside in the dark like the toys! The children were fabulous at describing their feelings and communicated these with great facial expressions, body language and voice changes. We have some super budding actors and actresses! We collected some excellent vocabulary and added this to our working wall. We have used our exploration of characters feelings and vocabulary to write sentences using the personal pronoun ‘I’ with great success. SHOUT OUT to Miley and Callum for their super ideas!
In maths this week we have continued to work on greater than and less than with numbers to 20. We are using the signs < > correctly and even trying to PROVE our answers by using a range of practical resources. Well done children.
Phonics homework this week involves reading some of the Year 1 common exception words. For this week’s work your child will need a dice. You may have one lurking in a board game or even in the kitchen drawer. If not, the there are plenty of downloadable dice apps for mobile phones or you could use this one on your home computer. http://dice.virtuworld.net/ Remember to have lots of fun with the game and repeat it at intervals over the next few days.
That’s all for this week.
See you on Monday
