28.2.19 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 28th Feb 2019 @ 1:25pm

Welcome back – well we are officially half way through the academic year and we have some wonderful activities planned for the next term and a half.

We would like to say a huge thank you for those that attended the parent’s phonics meeting on Tuesday.  We hope you found the information shared useful and you now feel informed and prepared in the world of phonics.  If you were unable to attend the meeting then please do get in touch and we can provide you with some resources and copies of the handouts from the meeting.

Don’t forget that it is Sandymere’s All Ages Service at St John’s church this Sunday where your child is invited to take part.  Letters have been sent home.

This week in Sandymere we have entered the world of building bridges.  As part of our topic ‘Who thought of that?’ we will be looking at Inventors and Inventions and what better way to start than trying to build bridges?!  The children had, great fun using wooden blocks, Lego and K’inex trying to build a bridge that would stand freely, allow a small boat to pass under and a toy car to drive over.  Photographs will be added to the gallery section soon of their efforts.  The children then went on to design and label their own bridges.  There is lots of new vocabulary being learnt and the children have had to make good use of their phonics skills to spell these new words such as crank, pulley and pillar.  Well done Sandymere – your bridge designs were impressive!  In English we are sharing the book Rosie Revere, Engineer who also likes to design and build.  We are looking forward to sharing Rosie’s adventures as we look at the book over the next few weeks.

In maths the children have been continuing to look at addition by making 10 first.  If the children could continue to practise their bonds to 10 this would be a huge help.  Don’t forget online games such as Funky Mummy to support this.

In science this week we have been looking at labelling animals body parts and again developing our phonics skills in spelling these sometimes tricky words.  We have also looked at animals skeletons and tried to guess which skeleton belonged to each animal.  We had a lot of fun with this!  Next week we will be exploring what animals eat.

Also this week we have begun to look at data handling in computing.  The children explored collecting their own data and then recording it as tally charts and pictograms.  We found out that most people were happy when we collected the data and that more people in Sandymere class have brown eyes than blue or green!  We then created pictograms using computer software.

Mrs Worstencroft has been making music with the children using different objects and parts of the classroom such as waste bins and radiators.  I wasn’t there to hear the final composition but the children were very enthusiastic about making music!

Don’t forget World Book Day next Thursday 7th March - letters have gone home about dressing up and taking part.

That’s it for this week.

Have a wonderful weekend and I’ll see you all on Monday.
