And breathe .....

WOW what a long half term we have had! What superstars the children have been.  They have all setlled into Year 1 life beautifully and have adapted to the more formal learning approach admirably.  Well done children.

It was lovely to see all the parents at parents evening – thank you for coming to see us.  If you missed us then please do pop into the office to arrange an appointment (if we haven’t managed to speak to you first!)

In Maths this week we turned our attentions to subtraction.  The children soon got to grips with this and even showed progress in subtracting using a number line.  We also looked at numbers to 100 using the Splat Square.  There is a link to this on the previous blog, however it seems this is only compatible with laptops/desk top computer rather than tablets and phones – sorry!

In Literacy the children have worked hard on reading and spelling the common exception words.  These can be found in the FRONT of your child’s reading diary.  Speaking of reading diaries, all children have been sent home with TWO books for the half term break.  Keep reading peeps!

We were treated to a visit from Mrs Swift with her gorgeous hedgehogs on Tuesday.  Mrs Bettley has posted a blog about this – do check it out.

We looked at the Creation story in RE and worked hard to sequence the story then write it in our own words for a writing assessment.  The children are assessed every half term in their writing and are asked to write completely unaided.  The key skills we are looking for are:

·         Correct use of capital letters

·         Correct use of full stops

·         Finger spaces

·         Sentences that make sense

·         Neat handwriting

·         The use of ‘and to join sentences

These are all skills your child could practise at home too.

It’s not all been about assessment this week though as we had great fun creating leaf animals using autumn leaves.  They look amazing. Look out for them in the classroom windows after half term.

In history we wrote questions we could ask to interview our relatives about toys from their childhood.  Check out the homework book!!!

All that’s left to say is have a HAPPY, SAFE and RELAXING half term.

See you all in a week!

Mrs Williamson and Mrs Jones
