3.10.19 Sandymere Learning Update
Date: 3rd Oct 2019 @ 9:18am
Hello! As I sit and type this blog I'm looking outside and thinking it is defintiely feeling autumnal today! The perfect time for the children to look for signs of autumn on their doorstep. Perhaps you might look for signs of autumn on your walk into school or even take a walk in the park this weekend? Marbury Park is stunning at this time of year when the trees start to change colour. Let's hope the rain stays off!
This week we have been looking at the where we live in the world and had great fun searcing for the UK on a world map. We then explored the 4 countries that make up the UK. The children were introduced to atlases and were fascinated by this different style of book - perhaps you have an atlas at home that you could share with your child? It's another way of sneaking in some extra reading and capturing the love of books. The children are enjoying our On our doorstep topic and seem to find geography lessons fascinating. Another fun home learning task could be to take a look at Google Earth and see if you can find where you live?
In Sandymere we are really enjoying looking at a range of books and reading material - this week the children were treated to Erin's choice - a book called Lettice - The Flying Rabbit. They loved hearing her read it!
We also enyoyed the book While You Were Sleeping. A story all about nocturnal animals and how the world comes alive at night. All children changed their library books on Wednesday and there were some excited squeals to be had when they spotted some class favourites added to the basket such as Daisy 006 and The Gruffallo. It was so lovely to hear the children recommending certain library books to each other - one child said he'd shared Pinnochio with his dad and grandad and asked if he could have the same book again this week. Such a delight to hear!
On the theme of books, we finished reading the story of Lost and Found this week. We explored the characters feelings and wrote speech bubbles sharing how the penguin and the boy felt when they were reunited at the end of the story. We carried out siome lovely role play and used the magic mic to hear the fabulous conversations too.
In art this week we looked at drawing penguins but in the style of an illustrator. The children used a step by step guide to recreate penguins in a more animated style and I have to say they are absolutley gorgeous. You can check them out at parents evening on our Lost and Found display.
In maths this week we have been exploring a range of practical resources and took a look at part - part - whole model. A great resource for aiding addition and subtraction. We will be carrying out addition and subtraction in the coming weeks.
Phonics is going really well this week and some children have been introduced to the split vowel digraph. We have also been focussing on the reading and spelling of tricky words.
Mrs Worstencroft is looking forward to helping the children to plan their own version of Lost and Found this week and will be looking at the part - part - whole model in more detail in maths.
Don't forget to book your parent's evening appointments online.
See you all on Monday.
