3.5.18 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 3rd May 2018 @ 9:43am

Well we had some excitement in Sandymere this week with the arrival of the veggies! They have all arrived to escape the mean Evil Pea (from the book Supertato by Sue Hendra) who is causing all sorts of mischief! The veggies are hoping that Supertato can save the day. We have completed some wonderful work relating to this book including making predictions about the text and speech bubbles to communicate how we think the veggies are feeling whilst under threat. The children are going to be retelling the story through pictures and actions today. SECRET TASK ALERT - could your child create their own Supertato? Take a look at this link for inspiration http://adventuresandplay.com/make-your-own-supertato/ or perhaps make your own Evil Pea?

In Maths we have started a unit of work on non-standard measures. We have used multi-link to measure the heights of superheroes and whilst saving the veggies from toilet roll madness we have carefully unwrapped the veggies and compared the lengths of their toilet paper wrappings. Using language such as longer, shorter, longest, shortest, tallest, and smallest. We then went on to measure the length of different items within the classroom using fish fingers! SHOUT OUT to Jayden and Mya for their excellent team work and measuring skills. Perhaps you could try measuring items at home using non-standard measures too? Ask your child to tell you how we did it in class.

This week we have begun a new unit of work in Science and began by looking at animals and their babies. The children were surprised to hear that the mum and dad animals had different names such as male horse is a stallion and a female horse a mare. We had great fun trying to remember them all! We also looked at the lifecycle of a butterfly and worked hard with partners to recall this. SHOUT OUT to Mason and Amelia for their beautiful illustrated version. We are going to be looking at different animals groups next week and compare omnivore, herbivore and carnivore.

The children had their final additional PE session with Roger this week and thoroughly enjoyed the team games. They were encouraged to use their listening skills, team work and problem solving skills to carry out a range of challenges. Hats off to all the children who managed to do this!

Also this week we practised our smiles for the class photo on Tuesday. All the children were dressed impeccably and stood beautifully for their photograph. You’re in for a treat!

Don’t forget next week is a short week with Bank Holiday Monday. So take advantage of the gorgeous weather that’s on its way, let your child take their reading books outside and find a comfy place to read. You could even take a photo and email it to admin to let us see them reading outdoors.

Have an amazing weekend and I’ll see you all on Tuesday.
