30.11.17 Sandymere Learning Update
Date: 30th Nov 2017 @ 9:20am
This week we will start with the weather! My word it has become quite chilly. Thank you to all the parents/carers that have sent their child with a suitable warm coat, hats, gloves etc. May we ask that all accessories are clearly named so that we can reunite lost gloves with their rightful owners? Thank you. We will be asking the children to put their accessories in their coat pockets when they’re not needed.
This week we have ventured into the world of Samuel Pepys by looking at his diary. We have had great fun role playing and hot seating Samuel Pepys by asking him questions to gather further information about the fire. The children asked and wrote some fabulous questions using question marks brilliantly. A SHOUT OUT to Tom for his fabulously ‘posh’ acting! We have also been looking at personal pronoun ‘I’ this week and using this to write our own diaries.
During independent writing activities many children are working really hard to take on the challenge of using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces, as well as trying to form their letters correctly. In addition to this we are looking for the children to spell the common exception words (tricky words) correctly. This is still an area that needs lots of practise so please don’t forget to use the Year 1 list sent home at Parent’s Evening and practise them at home too. In class we played ‘Word Switch’ using the common exception words for different phonics phases. We have also sent homework home relating to this too. Below are links to useful clips and games to practise.
In maths we have been looking at how to make given numbers to 10 in as many different ways as possible. The children have been looking out for patterns and sequences within numbers and explaining these to a buddy. A SHOUT OUT to Grace and Archie who transferred their addition work to working with money. Well done!
We are well on our way with Benchmarking children in their reading and several children have made wonderful progress. A huge thank you for your continued support at home. Don’t worry if your child hasn’t moved on recently as all children progress at different rates. Just remember to read with your child a little and often, talk about the book, ask them questions and even read a few pages to them. Children love to listen to other people read them stories. At school we are sharing lots of poems with the children and listening out for rhyming words.
The children enjoyed using the apparatus in PE this week and are showing some good balancing skills. Well done children.
Thank you to those who have sent items for our Christmas Hamper. It’s looking a little more festive! Don’t forget our hamper is Traditional Christmas so stuffing, after dinner mints, mince pies, yule log, candles, wine etc would be fabulous.
