30.11.18 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 30th Nov 2018 @ 10:57am

We had a wonderful start to the week with our arts and crafts experience at Norton Priory Museum. (See previous blog for images and more information)  The staff at the museum were hugely impressed by the children’s impeccable behaviour and went as far to say that the children ‘stood out’ because of this!  Well done children!

Across the school this week it has been anti – bullying week.  In Sandymere class we shared the book Blue Chamaeleon by Emily Gravett and explored how we don’t need to change who we are to ‘fit in’.  By respecting one and others differences then we can all get along with each other. We then looked at the Over St John’s S.T.O.P campaign which promotes the message of the children telling someone if they feel they are being bullied.

We also looked at through role play and drama how bullying is intentional and repeated.  This helped us to understand that bullying can be

Thank you to all the children who took part in the anti-bullying competition. We received some fabulous posters communicating the S.T.O.P messages.

Also this week have continued the Choose Respect messages through our art.  We looked at the works of Ugandan artist Ranjit Bhamra and the children were fascinated to discover that he paints using a paint brush in his mouth as his arms are disabled.  We looked particularly at the image ‘We will remember’ and tried to recreate the striped backdrop by painting using our mouths too!  We quickly realised that this is not an easy thing to do!  The children then compared the similarities with Mark Rothko’s art work.  We will continue with this next week.

In maths we have continued to look at subtraction using the part part whole model and worked on creating our own number stories orally.  The children are making great strides with this and really getting to grips with creating number stories now.

In English we wrote a recount of our trip to Norton Priory using a story map to help us and then later in the week the children have created their own information pages for toys that use wheels.  These are proudly displayed in the classroom for all to see.

This week’s phonics homework is actually learning to spell the days of the week – this is a key year one objective ‘to read and spell the days of the week’.  We have previously explored the –ay grapheme and how it is mainly used at the end of a word.  The children will be quizzed on these spelling next week.

Such a wonderful week rounded off with Odd Socks day to celebrate our differences and individuality.

See you all next week!
