7.10.18 Sandymere Learning Update
Date: 7th Oct 2018 @ 11:05am
We’ve had another busy and exciting week this week which started with our PSHCE lesson where we talked about keeping and staying safe. The children were asked the question ‘what do you need to do if you need the emergency services?’ There was lots of sensible discussion and we discussed the importance of knowing your home address. This week’s homework is for your child to learn their home address and to write it on the envelope provided. If we could have these returned to school by MONDAY 8th October that would be fabulous because we will be using these to send letters home at the start of the week.
In English we have discovered that there is an alien in our story Toys in Space by Mini Grey. The alien is a Hoctopize and we had fun creating our own Hoctopize puppets. Later in the week Mrs Worstencroft was so curious and impressed by these that she asked the children to give her the instructions so that she could make her own. The children have written these down for her. You will be able to see the puppets when you come to parents evening on 23rd and 24th October. DON’T FORGET TO BOOK YOUR APPOINTMENTS ONLINE. Also in English the children considered what the Hoctopize should do with all the toys he has borrowed from earth. The children decided that the Hoctopize should return the toys to their owners. Well done to Esme for acting the role of Hoctopize brilliantly.
In maths we have focussed our attentions on ordering and sequencing numbers, looking for patterns and being confident with one more and one less. The children are working hard on their number formation too. There are still a few number reversals though so please could you practise numbers to 9 at home? They could draw them in sand using their fingers, use wet paint brushes on the pavement outside, use a stick and draw the numbers in the soil, the air or simply practise them on paper. Every little bit of practise helps.
We have begun Benchmarking children’s reading this week looking at those who have shown wonderful progress. Children's segmenting and blending skills are improving and there is some lovely fluency. Don’t forget to talk to your children about their books too and ask questions so that comprehension skills are developed too. When Benchmarking we look at reading comprehension as well as word recognition.
This week we had a visit from Andrew Moffatt who shared his No Outsiders work with us. (See Head teacher’s Blog) It was a wonderful day and he really helped us to think about the importance of including all people whether from a different country, have different faiths or beliefs, have a disability, from different families and so on. The children were impressively engaged and had some fabulous discussions.
We have completed so much work and so many tasks that this blog could be twice the length! Hope you’re all enjoying a wonderful weekend.
See you on Monday.
