7.11.19 Sandymere Learning Update
Date: 7th Nov 2019 @ 11:04am
Welcome back! So lovely to see so many happy faces ready to return to school and continue on our exciting learning journey.
This week we have been looking at poetry in our English lessons with a particular focus on the poem ‘There’s no such thing as monsters!’ We have explored a range of vocabulary and practised saying the poem off by heart. We are very impressed with children’s fantastic memories – perhaps they could share the poem at home with you too? We had great fun thinking about and creating our own monsters such as the Golden Pot Monster that gobbles up the raffle tickets and the Gymnastics Monsters that cartwheels across the playground. We will be ending the week by writing our own ‘There’s no such thing as monsters!’ poem. If you would like to hear the poem for yourselves then here is a link https://youtu.be/1vnKl_HAKdY
In maths this week we have been exploring the bar model for addition. We looked at this practically using multi-link then had a go using bar models in our recorded work. Some great progress with this method so we will be ending the week trying out problem solving activities using the bar models. This half terms maths homework is now live on our class page and also a paper copy will be coming home with you child this week.
As we continue our journey of fostering a love for books we have now started formal guided reading sessions in Sandymere. This is where we will be sharing a quality text together and using our inference and deduction skills to unpick the text. We will be developing our VIPERS skills throughout the process. Look out VIPERS sheets coming home next week which explains this is more detail for you. Each time your child take part in guided reading a stamp will be made in their reading diary.
This week we have shared a range of books including my favourite ‘The diary of a Wombat’ and Max’s choice ‘How to Build a Treehouse’. Mrs Monson also brought in her all-time favourite story ‘Puff the Magic Dragon’ and we listened to the song too. It certainly took us back to our childhood! You can listen along here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7lmAc3LKWM
In other areas of the curriculum, we built Delamere Street using cardboard boxes and used our positional language to help place the buildings in the correct places. We also talked about landmarks and other key items that we would see along the street including pedestrian crossings and lamp posts.
Well done to all the children that have been practising this week’s spellings. We have visited them frequently throughout the week and many children are using them in their day to day writing. Next week’s spellings are now live under the homework tab on our class page.
Mrs Pile took the children for gymnastics this week where the children explored stretching and curling. Such quiet, calm and sensible behaviour in PE this week. Well done children!
With Remembrance Day just around the corner the school is selling poppies on behalf of the British Legion. There is one more day to send in your donations for poppies and other small items such as snap bands and bracelets. We will be marking the occasion at school on Monday 11/11/19.
That’s just a little insight into our week!
See you all on Monday.
