8.2.19 Sandymere Learning Update

Date: 8th Feb 2019 @ 7:47pm

What a wonderful week we have had.  This week Mrs Snowdon talked to us in collective worship about being together and united through the Christian value of community.  ‘How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!’ Psalm 133:1 Within Sandymere class there were lots of opportunities to work together and reap the rewards of team work.  See the gallery section for the fabulous dragon machine that the children built in teams using different building materials. They were quite impressive!

We have now finished writing our dragon machine stories but there was still one more job to complete and that was to design and create their own dragon machine technical drawings.  These drawings are to be used for the story bags.  Again these were impressive with a lot of attention to detail.

This week has been Children’s Mental Health week and in Sandymere we have talked about how to keep our minds healthy as well as our bodies.  We discussed how our thoughts can range from happy to worries and niggles at the back of our minds.  There was some wonderful discussions and this translated to the illustrations they produced in response to the question ‘what is on your mind?’  These are now proudly displayed on the wall in our classroom.

In English we have started to look at the book Dear Greenpeace and have now turned our attentions to letter writing.  We have explored the features of letters and sorted formal and informal letters.  Also this week we have started to gather information about whales using Dear Greenpeace to find useful facts. Guided reading this week focused on one of the letters from the story and the children also explored the phoneme /e/ and looked for alternative graphemes.

In maths this week we revisited fact families.  We tried out different strategies and used a wider range of resources to help us.  Mrs Snowdon popped into our class to see how the children were getting on with their maths too.

We have been exploring maps and globes to work out where we live in geography.  The children were mesmerised by Google Earth and really enjoyed zooming in and searching for the school via aerial view and exploring the surrounding areas.  Google Earth can be explored on most devices and I know that many children are keen to look at this more closely at home too.  Perhaps you could help your child to access Google Earth at home and talk to them about the area in which they live?

I spied some beautiful dancing taking place in PE this week with Mrs Winder.  The children really are beginning to listen to the music and move with improved expression. Well done children!

Don’t forget to book your parent’s evening appointments.  Parent’s evenings are next Monday 11th February and Tuesday 12th February evenings.

That’s all for this week.

See you on Monday.
