9.5.19 Sandymere's Learning Update

Date: 9th May 2019 @ 1:26pm

Well it’s another short week this week but that’s not stopping us from working super hard and making the most wonderful progress.  The children in Sandymere are really trying hard to become more independent learners and stepping up to the new challenges we are presenting them with.

In English this week we have started to write our innovated versions of Stanley’s Stick and already we can see some fantastically creative ideas coming through.  At every opportunity we want the children to be independently using capital letters and full stops in their writing.  The children are now learning to self-check their work by reading it through and checking their sentences make sense and editing spellings and basic punctuation. This week we want the children to move away from relying on writing frameworks and let their creative juices flow – I can’t wait to read how their stories continue!

In phonics we have been exploring silent letters like g in gnome and k in knee.  We have also been working on our common exception words this week – these are the words that don’t always follow the rules of phonics that the children need to be able to read and spell.  Here is a copy so you can practise at home too.

In maths we have been looking at doubling numbers to 10. Perhaps they could practise this at home too with this catchy Double Number Zoo song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-KTHfrFit0

Our topic this term is ‘What’s in the forest?’ and we shall be visiting Delamere Forest for our class trip this term - letters will be sent home soon with all the details.  In science we have been looking at the parts of a plant and labelling these using the correct vocabulary.  I must say the finished diagrams are very neat and tidy! Well done children.  We took a closer look at the flower heads of rhododendrons and we could see the petals and stamens within the flowers.  These were then painted using water colours involving lots of close observations and colour mixing.  These will proudly be on display in the classroom in time for parents evening next week.

Don’t forget to book your parents evening slot.  Many parents have been super speedy and already got their appointments booked in – well done!  We can’t wait to share your child’s work and talk about your child’s progress.

In computing we used the Beebots to try our hand a basic programming.  The challenge this week was to programme the Beebot to move towards a cuddly toy by predicting the algorithms it would need.  We then looked at how we could adjust the algorithms to be more accurate (debugging) – lots of new experiences!

That’s all for this week.

See you all on Monday – hopefully feeling a little warner and sunnier!
