Blakemere's Weekly Blog - 02.03.2025
Date: 3rd May 2025 @ 9:59am
What a fantastic week we have had in Blakemere. I have been so impressed with the children’s commitment and drive towards their learning.
English
As we come to the end of our unit of work on The Selfish Giant, we spent some time at the beginning of the week thinking about the main character – The Giant. We compared his behaviours and ways from the beginning of the story to the end and the children then produced a written comparison about him. We then moved on to planning our final writing – a narrative retell of the story, which the children have now started.
Maths
This week, we have explored ratio in Maths. The children have been exploring different objects and comparing the quantity of each item to each other. We have started to approach problems involving ratio too and will continue to do this next week. I have also been impressed with the children’s engagement within our Maths revision lesson over the past two weeks also. It has been great to see them drawing on their previous learning to help with this.
Science
This week in Science, we explored Sir Isaac Newton’s theory of how light refracts when it travels through a transparent material to create a visible spectrum. He demonstrated that even though light appears white, it is actually made up of different colours. We then tried this investigation out for ourselves and faintly saw the visible spectrum.
Year 6 Swimming
I was incredibly impressed with our Year 6 children on Monday during their first swimming lesson. They all tried their best within the pool. However, I’m not sure they enjoyed the walk back to school as much as they did the swimming.
Well done
A huge well done this week to Phoebe for winning the raffle ticket prize and to Eva E, Franklin, Annie, Zac and Michael for having their work selected for Excellent Examples. They will bring this work home with them next Friday to share with you. Another well done to Kai for being selected as Blakemere’s Workers of the Week by his peers.
Year 6 SATS
On our class webpage, there is lots of information regarding the Year 6 SATS week, which begins Monday 12th May to Thursday 15th May 2025. Thank you so much to all the parents who have submitted their response regarding the breakfast club during SATS week. We also finished off the week playing a Deal or No Deal game linked to Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar. Lots of fun was had by all.
Secret Question
Share our class blog with your child and send them in with the answer to this secret question to earn themselves some raffle tickets:
Name the colours in the visible spectrum.
What can you do at home?
• Ensure your child has prepared themselves for the week ahead by having their reading book in school with them every day. I will be checking this every day next week as we have some children who do not have their book with them regularly.
• PE is on a Monday and Thursday so please ensure that your child has the correct PE kit in on those days. Appropriate footwear is also encouraged. We will continue to be outside for PE on Monday’s along as it is not raining so it is incredibly important that the children have jogging bottoms to wear.
• Year 6 swimming will continue now every Monday. Please make sure your children has their swimming costume, goggles and a towel with them for this.
• Read with your child and encourage them to find books and reading materials that they are interested in. I am also always happy to help and recommend books if needed. Please record this reading each day on the online reading log. A new link is sent to you from Learning with Parents each week. I absolutely love reading the comments, seeing the photographs and hearing the audio clips of the children reading.
• Encourage your child to practise their times tables on Times Table Rockstar. Times tables are incredibly important in all areas of Maths and a fast and confident recall of them really helps.
• Practise the list of spellings that are sent home. Please let me know of you need another copy of these.
Enjoy the rest of the Bank Holiday weekend and if you have any questions then please do ask.
