Happy New Year!
What a great first week back we have had! It has been wonderful seeing everyone back after the Christmas break with great attitudes towards their learning.
English
This week, we have continued to use the texts ‘Of Thee I Sing and Young, Gifted and Black to inspire our writing. We have learnt about how Stormzy (the Rapper) sent up a scholarship to support the higher education of two black students at Cambridge University. This inspired us to plan and write a diary entry in role as him exploring his thought and feelings about everything he did. We then went on to learn about another explorer called Matthew Henson. We looked at his achievements and used the present perfect tense to write about him. We will continue to explore him next week.
Maths
This week in Maths we have continued to explore the topic of fractions and have spent the week ordering and adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators before moving on to solving problems involving them. For each of these elements the children have to use their knowledge of multiplication to help them find a common denominator.
Geography
On Friday, we had a geography day exploring all about the UK and how it is made up. We looked at the counties, regions and major cities of the UK before moving on to looking at the physical features.
Science
In Science, we have explored how animals have adapted to their environments over time to enable them to survive. We explored giraffes, polar bears, camels and penguins and some of the adaptations these have experienced to enable them to continue as a specie.
Well done
A huge well done this week to Tate for winning the raffle ticket prize and to Franklin, Holly and Ava D for having their work selected for Excellent Examples. They will bring this work home with them next Friday to share with you. Finally, a huge well done to Rosabeller for being selected as Worker of the Week in Blakemere by her peers.
Secret Question
Share our class blog with your child and send them in with the answer to this secret question to earn themselves some raffle tickets:

What can you do at home?
• Ensure your child has prepared themselves for the week ahead by having their reading book in school with them every day.
• PE is on a Monday and Thursday so please ensure that your child has the correct PE kit in on those days. Appropriate footwear is also encouraged. We will continue to be outside for PE on Monday’s along as it is not raining so it is incredibly important that the children have jogging bottoms to wear.
• Read with your child and encourage them to find books and reading materials that they are interested in. I am also always happy to help and recommend books if needed. Please record this reading each day on the online reading log. A new link is sent to you from Learning with Parents each week. I absolutely love reading the comments, seeing the photographs and hearing the audio clips of the children reading.
• Encourage your child to practise their times tables on Times Table Rockstar. Times tables are incredibly important in all areas of Maths and a fast and confident recall of them really helps.
• Practise the list of spellings that are sent home. A new set off words will come home on Monday.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and if you have any questions then please do ask.
